MAESTEG 69 pts
TENBY UNITED 10
With their fate already decided, Tenby United turned in a rather lacklustre performance against Maesteg on Saturday, going down to the Old Parish by 69 points to 10 at Llynfi Road.
Already consigned to play their rugby in division three (west) next season, the Seasiders suffered from a rather fatalistic lack of confidence, which Maesteg punished heavily to notch up 45 points without reply in the second half and record a convincing double over the West Walians.
The Old Parish struck first with a try from skipper Lloyd Padgett converted by fullback David Pearce.
Tenby lock Justin Jones replied with a well-taken try from a powerful drive, which stand-off Gavin Scotcher converted to put the United back on terms, before Maesteg regained the lead with a Matthew Wareham try, converted by Pearce.
Pearce extended the advantage with another penalty, before a snap drop goal from Scotcher reduced the arrears to seven points.
On the stroke of half-time, Maesteg centre Paul Smith grabbed another try which Pearce converted to make it 24-10.
After the change around, the Old Parish stepped up several gears, with a further seven tries, to destroy any remaining resistance from the Seasiders.
Wing Marcus Smith pouched a hat-trick of touchdowns, Smith grabbed his second, while Colin Lewis, Gareth Davies and Richard Noble picked up a try apiece.
Pearce added to the tally with five conversions to complete the rout.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby face Llantrisant at Heywood Lane.
Tenby fielded: Carl Broaders, Gavin Jones, Paul Luger, Dean Bowen, Dominic Subbiani, Gavin Scotcher, Mark Thomas, Endaf Howells, Simon Griffiths, Nicky Carpenter, Justin Jones, Paul Broaders, Max Howells, Nicky Allen, Adrian Chiffi.
