Harvey Yau, a year 8 student at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, has once again excelled after sitting the British Mathematical Olympiad round one at the end of last term.
After doing well in the Senior Maths Challenge last November, he was invited to sit this follow-on round at the end of the same month.
The Senior Maths Challenge is primarily aimed at students in the sixth form and across Britain less than 1,400 students sat the paper. Despite competing against students up to five years older than him, he managed to achieve a gold medal, which was only awarded to the top 17 candidates overall. He was also awarded a certificate of distinction and a book prize.
"We're exceptionally proud of Harvey's achievement," said Mr. Robert Newsome, headteacher at Dyffryn Taf. "He has a unique talent and is already on his A-Level course. This competition has given him an opportunity to stretch himself further and he has taken full advantage of that. Our school is keen to recognise talent and to give it the opportunity to flourish."
He will now go on to sit round two of the same competition on January 31.
