THE Baghdaddies are a unique bunch of Newcastle musicians who have developed a totally unique sound. Gypsy jazz, roots, ska, Balkan beat, world dance, are all terms that have been used in an attempt to pin down the band sound.
The band prefer 'Toon Tone' which is also the title of their last album. The overriding influence is brassy Balkan gypsy wedding music and klezmer from sources such as Ivo Papasov and Goran Bregovich. Whatever you call it, the music is made for dancing and the Baghdaddies are one of the most fun bands in this or any other universe, and guarantee an uplifting and joyous night at the Queen's Hall headlining The Span Winter Warmer on Friday, November 29.
The Baghdaddies have local connections with guitarist Ziad originally hailing from Boncath and playing around the county in the early '90s. Since teaming up with Newcastle's world music funsters they have become firm favourites at Glastonbury and many other festivals around Europe.
They will be joined by a young band from Liverpool, called Vitamina who have developed their own style of jazzy pop with world music flavours. Vitamina feature trumpet and congas, original songs and infectious rhythms.
The evening will be topped off by DJ Shana on the decks and featuring décor created by students of the Music Tech Course of Pembrokeshire College.
Tickets are £7 each and can be booked from the Queen's Hall box office on (01834) 861408 and the SPAN office 869323. This will be a bouncing night of Christmas fun and not to be missed.
