With the Royal Air Force celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the Heritage Centre at Pembroke Dock - a town with a long RAF tradition - is planning a series of events to mark this aviation milestone.

For nearly 30 years, Pembroke Dock was an RAF community, and flying boats operated out of ‘PD’ from 1931 until the famous Sunderlands were retired in 1957.

The Heritage Centre, run by the Sunderland Trust charity, is working on a new exhibition, drawing upon its archive and collection which includes many important RAF items. This will be on display by April 1 - the actual anniversary date.

Uniforms worn by service personnel of many nations will be included, but the centre has gaps, particularly of uniforms worn by the WAAFs - the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

Explained centre manager Stuart Berry: “We have a fine collection of uniforms, but a WAAF uniform and the distinctive cap have eluded us. We are appealing for help in locating such items - and will be very happy to have these on loan.

“We are also making a list of people who served in the RAF, at any period, who live in this area whom we can invite to our events.”

Anyone who can help with the uniform search should contact the Heritage Centre on 01646 684220, e-mail [email protected]. Former RAF Pembroke Dock personnel can also get in touch by ’phone or email, or there is a special webpage where details are being collected: http://www.sunderlandtrust.com/calling-raf-pembroke-dock-personnel/.
