Order of the Indian Empire and Military Cross group of 11 medals awarded to the late Sir Frederick Tymms, who was born in Tenby, have raised £7,000 in a sale, along with other memorabilia from an illustrious time in the military.

Sir Frederick Tymms, who passed away in 1987 aged 98, had a highly distinguished career, serving with the Royal Air Force, Royal Flying Corps and South Lancashire Regiment, and being named as director of Civil Aviation Government of India in the 1930s and '40s.

He was a founder member and Master of the Company of Air Pilots and Navigators and served as UK representative on the International Civil Aviation Organisation Council in Montreal, before retiring in 1955.

Bidding for the medals did not quite reach the reserve in the actual auction at Sotheby's in London, but they sold in a private sale negotiated for a sum close to the pre-sale low estimate.

Interestingly, the medals were purchased by the same collector who paid £11,400 for medals awarded to Sq. Ldr Ernest Livingston Johnston, who died in the R101 airship disaster in 1930.

Sir Frederick Tymms was Johnston's guardian and the collector wanted to keep the medals together.
