Ty Hafan, the children's hospice in Wales, is asking Welsh pupils to take part in a unique project by creating textile squares, as elaborate or simple as they wish, for the charity's giant recreation of the Welsh Dragon. This year, for St. David's Day, dozens of schools across Wales will be getting creative and raising money for charity as they create squares for Ty Hafan's big Dragon Appeal, including Ysgol Gynradd Hendygwyn in Whitland. Made up of thousands of individual squares, the final design will form an enormous picture of the Welsh dragon. When completed, it will be so big it will have to be assembled on the pitch of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Squares can be created using any craft technique possible such as fabric painting, appliqué, weaving, tie dye, beadwork, the list is endless! Everyone can take part, regardless of their crafting skills producing squares as creative as simple as they like. It costs only £1 to submit each square and children and adults will be helping to make a big difference to the children and families of Ty Hafan. To apply to take part in the Dragon Appeal, schools are asked to simply fill in an application form on the Ty Hafan website or call to order a hard copy application pack. On receipt of their application, they will then be sent instructions of the size and colour of their squares, which will be one of the colours in the Welsh flag - green, red, black or white. Project co-ordinator Liz Rundle says: "The aim of the project is to engage as many people as possible, with an affinity to Wales, to help create something unique which reflects our rich and diverse Welsh heritage. I am delighted that so many of Wales's young people have joined the appeal and will be helping to raise money which will be used to enrich the short lives of the children in Wales suffering from life limiting conditions. "We are hoping that schools will join in with community groups, WIs and the many individuals who are already taking part in our project to help us achieve our goal." All money raised will go towards the free and vital service Ty Hafan provides each year to over 170 children with life limiting illnesses and their families. The hospice also continues to give support to a further 100 families whose children have sadly died.
