After taking the lead three times in Saturday's home clash with Pennar Robins, two late goals ended Manorbier's current winning streak with a 4-3 defeat. Disappointed not to walk away with at least a point, Manorbier can be pleased with their performance against a good Pennar side in their division three clash.
The game started well for Manorbier with a good run from James Hall, who put Marc Schuster in down the line, and he crossed for Paul Maytum to hit first time on the half volley to make it 1-0 after five minutes.
Pennar soon equalised from good one touch passes from their forwards to make it 1-1.
Manorbier worked hard in midfield, with Austyn John and Dave Blackwell creating many chances for the forwards to take the lead. However, that's where it ended in the first half - half-time score 1-1.
An incident of note in the first half involved the fans' favourite referee, Pembrokeshire League veteran Colin Newbury, who took a blow to the back of the head from the football that left him face down in the mud - with a wipe of his glasses, good old Colin was fit to resume play.
In the second half, the game was evenly balanced, with both sides pressing to take the lead and both 'keepers played well to keep the scoreline level.
Then came the Manorbier breakthrough; a retaken corner from Austyn John was met by Paul Maytum, who powered it in from 12 yards with a well-taken header to make it 2-1.
Dave Blackwell missed an opportunity to extend the lead after good build up play from Maytum and Hall, but it was spurned wide of the post.
Pennar then came back with another equaliser from their sharp forwards to make it 2-2.
Not to be disheartened, Manorbier picked up their pace and Marc Schuster then made it 3- 2 with 10 minutes to go.
Pennar's heads seemingly dropped at the resilient response from Manorbier, but it wasn't to be.
With five minutes remaining on the clock, Pennar equalised to make it 3-3. Then came a 'hit and hope' volley that went over Tom Christopher's head in the Manorbier goal to send the Pennar team jubilant.
The final whistle came shortly afterwards, with a final score of Manorbier United 3, Pennar Robins 4.
Manorbier have now scored 13 goals in their last three games, all due the new partnership of Paul Maytum and Marc Schuster up front, coupled by a positive attitude from the rest of the team.
After the game, coach Robbie Thomas said: "We are pleased with the way we played, but obviously disappointed we did not come away with the win or at least the draw; our recent results have shown we can match any team in this league on our day."
