The National Garden Scheme in Pembrokeshire is going great guns this year! This weekend, two gardens to see are Aderyn y Mor and Mead Lodge (writes Nicky Rogers).

Mead Lodge opened last year for the first time and now Aderyn y Mor follows suit this year for the first time.

Visit these interesting and fun gardens and you will be supporting the NGS (and the Paul Sartori Foundation) which in turn supports nursing and gardening charities.

Mead Lodge, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Seal is an unexpected secluded country garden, set on a south facing slope overlooking the Pembroke estuary.

A garden of three-quarters-of-an-acre, it reflects the owners keen interest in ferns, grasses and herbs and includes terraces with Chinese and Mediterranean influences, coloured themed beds, a small arboretum, fernery and vegetable garden.

There will be readings of garden related poetry and prose.

Last year, was their first year open to the public and the compliments came flooding in, so please support them again this year. Lots of information and a map of the garden will be available.

There are teas and plant sales to encourage you to linger on a sunny day. It is open from today (Friday) until Monday, 11 am - 5 pm, admission £2.50. Follow the yellow NGS signs on the day or for further information, telephone 01646 682504.

I still can't quite work out how they do it, but Mr. and Mrs. Howells have made their extremely steep water facing garden at Aderyn y Mor into something definitely worth seeing!

Opening for the first time this year, the garden is full of colour set on a steep cliffside with a stunning marine backdrop.

There is a whole host of plants to look at including some exotic ones, as well as two ponds.

Access is by a robust wooden stairway interspersed with platforms with seating areas both at the top and bottom. This garden is also open from today (Friday) until Monday, 11 am - 5 pm, admission £2.00. Teas available. Telephone 01646 680092 for more information.

NGS leaflets available at all Tourist Information Centres or contact Nicky Rogers on 01646 661462.
