Last year's sell-out Black and White Ball in aid of the Tsunami Appeal, has managed to raise over £28,000 for the disaster fund. The 800 ticket ball, with a black and white theme, was held on March 1, at Folly Farm, Begelly, and thanks to the generosity of Texaco, Pembroke, who underwrote the costs of staging the event, every penny raised went to the fund. Haverfordwest and Pembroke Rotary clubs sold the tickets and assisted in running the event, and have overseen the distribution of the money via Rotary International and Rotary Clubs in the disaster area. The 'Schools Reawaken' scheme has benefited by £23,000, and this will assist in the rebuilding of a school in Sri Lanka. A further £5,265 raised on the evening, will be used to build 20 fishing boats and equip them with engines and nets. Each boat provided supports three fishing families and a further two on shore, and the building of the boats locally, is a further boost for the Sri Lankan economy. Spokesman for the Texaco and Rotary organising committee, Phil Thompson, said: "The Boxing Day disaster touched the hearts of everyone in Pembrokeshire, and thanks to those who bought tickets and the businesses that supported the event, we feel that a real difference has been made to the rebuilding of people's lives."
