Ten-year-old Harry Owen, from Begelly, confirmed his position as Britain's best all round under 11 gymnast by recently winning two gold medals at the National Apparatus Finals held at the Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff.

Harry held off competition from 55 of Britain's best gymnasts who were representing teams from Northern Ireland, Wales and regions of England including London, South East, South West, East Midlands, North Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West, to become British champion and claimed a second gold as Wales won the overall team title.

In an extremely exciting competition, Harry led from the start by producing the best vaults of the day and set a high standard in the other six disciplines, including a personal best of 9.7 on high bar to narrowly edge out Kayvon Arasteh (South West) and Alex Rothe (Wales), to win the individual gold medal.

In the lead up to these finals in recent weeks, Harry became Welsh floor and vault champion and qualified to represent Wales at the British Schools tumbling finals at Stoke on Trent where he won a bronze medal and again Wales won the overall British Champions cup.

Earlier this month at the Welsh apparatus finals, also held in Cardiff, Harry represented the City of Swansea team who became Welsh champions. Through a connection with the Swansea club and part of the Wales under 11 squad, Harry is looking forward to a possible trip to Moscow in 2005.

Despite training at the City of Swansea Club with coach Chris Jones and Welsh champion team-mates Alex Rothe, Josh Gallagher and Ben Chivers for five three-hour sessions per week, Harry still finds some time to enjoy other sports with considerable individual success. Since representing Pembrokeshire at gymnastics from the age of six, he has also represented Pembrokeshire schools at rugby, cricket, athletics track and field and cross country

Before his recent British and Welsh successes at gymnastics, Harry's special sporting moment was to score three tries on his debut for the Pembrokeshire under 11s rugby team earlier this season, and was part of the Pembrokeshire team on their recent trip to Madrid.

Harry has twice been Pembrokeshire Cross Country champion and finished fourth in the National Cross Country Championships. He also enjoys cricket and has turned out this season for the Pembrokeshire under 10s team.

Despite his busy schedule, Harry has been improving his personal bests at indoor and outdoor athletics. He is the current West Wales champion for indoor triple jump and recently won the West Wales hurdles final at Carmarthen in a time of 13.8. Perhaps his greatest athletic talent lies in the long jump where at a recent meeting he jumped 4.39m and will be turning out for Pembrokeshire Harriers later this season

Harry's obvious delight with his recent successes has further fuelled his teenage ambition to represent Wales at gymnastics in the Junior Commonwealth Games.
