Myrtle House Hotel sits modestly on St. Mary's Street, Tenby. You've probably walked this street many times before and never thought to give the building a second glance. But it is this small, two-star metro hotel that has received an award from Trip Advisor that has been awarded to less than one per cent of all accommodation on the global site.

Owners Jan and Rob Evans display with pride their newly-achieved British Travellers Choice Award 2013.

But this isn't the first time Myrtle House has been noticed by travel giant Trip Advisor. It is also the proud owner of the Certificate of Excellence award two years running - 2012 and 2013.

Jan and Rob are the only two staff at this charismatic eight-bedroom hotel. With no previous experience in the hotel business, Jan and Rob decided to make the move from the South Wales Valleys to Tenby after Jan fell ill.

"I did a lot of thinking when I was ill, it makes you re-evaluate your life." Having holidayed in Tenby since being a child, Jan had always loved the area and decided that she wanted to make the move, a career change and a new life in her childhood holiday spot.

Jan and Rob have worked hard to slowly, but surely renovate, redecorate and re-furnish this cosy hotel since they took ownership seven years ago, and each room has a personality of its own.

With listed windowsills and cornices, this hotel provides a homely and enchanting feel for its visitors.

"We were skint, we had to really work so hard to get the hotel off the ground, that's why we have all of our own pictures on the walls, we couldn't afford to buy new ones."

Jan feels that having no hotel experience helped her to create such a comfortable atmosphere for guests: "Where I'm from, everybody's door is always open, it's the same here, it's friendly."

And it must be working; famous artists, engineers and war veterans have all stayed here, and continue to come back to Myrtle House.

"We get a lot of return customers, it's never quiet here, a lot of our guests have become friends over the years and return to us every summer."

It's easy to believe that Jan and Rob have regular guests and returning customers - even after an hour's visit, it was strangely hard to say goodbye.

Being members of Pembrokeshire Tourism, Jan and Rob have access to training courses, advice and great networking opportunities that they can use to help make Myrtle Hotel an even better place to stay in the future. Pembrokeshire Tourism's chief executive, Maudie Hughes expressed her pride in having Myrtle House as a member of their organisation.

"I'm delighted that Jan and Rob have been recognised for all their efforts and to have won such a prestigious award is fantastic," she said.

"We have over 500 members here at Pembrokeshire Tourism and many of those are award-winners. This is just another reason to be proud of our beautiful county and the excellence showcased within the tourism sector."

Tenby is a place held dearly in Jan's heart, having never stayed in a hotel until she took on Myrtle House, she talks emotionally of all the memorable summer holidays she spent here in caravan parks and of the good fortune of her young grandsons, being brought up here.

"They've got it all, it makes me so happy to see them here, in the sea and on the beach."

So what does being the owner of a coveted British Travellers Choice award feel like?

"We were bouncing all day when we found out, we went out to celebrate. I think what means the most is that it is recognition of all our hard work, we've put our heart and soul into this place and we love it."
