New Guinea headhunters, African tribesmen and Afghan Bedouins sighted in seaside village hall? Well, not in the flesh maybe, but a head hunter's woven grass cape from Papua New Guinea will be one of the most unusual treasures to be found in Little Haven this Sunday, November 23.
The grass cape was collected in the 1950s by Rene Henri, well known explorer, dilettante, sometime hairdresser to the Russian royal family and collector. It will be part of a spectacular collection of rugs, carpets, bags, drapes and hangings, African and Oceanic masks and carvings and decorative artefacts from around the world to be shown for sale in the village hall in the quiet coastal village of Little Haven, west of Haverfordwest.
The collection belongs to David Gardner, collector and dealer, who is having a clearance sale of his private and trade sale items.
"I have been collecting these pieces for many years, but it is time that a lot of this lovely stuff found new homes," said David. "Many of the items will be for sale at half their normal price or less with piles of rugs starting at £15 and going up to £1,500, with many reduced to below £100."
The collection includes a large number of antique, old and new rugs, carpets and other weavings from Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Beluchistan, China, Africa and India. Amongst the textiles on offer will be a Persian embroidered horse cover, Kente cloths and Kuba raffia skirt lengths from Africa, storage bags and tent decorations and an antique ikat coat from Uzbekistan.
The doors open at 11 am and the sale continues until 5.00 pm.
"This is a unique opportunity for people to add interest and life to their home, holiday cottage or letting property at prices that anyone can afford," explained David, who is happy to share his knowledge and love for these beautiful things with anyone who turns up on the day. "Come and learn and marvel, but don't be surprised if at these special prices you leave with something wonderful for your home!"
