Club championships

There was a very high turnout for the club championships over the weekend.

The course was in superb condition and other than some drizzle on Sunday afternoon the weather was perfect for good golf to be played.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, club pro Oliver announced the players onto the tee for the start of each match and all set off full of hope.

There were some surprises at the early tee-off times on Sunday for some of the more favoured players, by Sunday afternoon there had been some superb golf played and lots of tales of disaster and non-returns on cards.

It was good to see lots of the junior members playing alongside the older members and in some cases more than holding their own.

Gavin Scotcher achieved best gross scores on Saturday and Sunday with 72 and 75, Saturday's best nett went to the old man himself Mel Beeley, while on Sunday, at the other end of the age scale, it was Billy Truman who came out tops. Mel Neale turned out on Sunday with his Demob shorts on exposing his tanned legs which is all very well if your socks are not inside out.

Seniors

This week's match was a home fixture against Newport Pembs GC. Having been given a roasting at their course earlier in the season, the team looked forward to reversing the score.

The course was in very good condition and weather favourable so an enjoyable day was anticipated.

Leading off were Trevor Lewis and Glyn Jones taking on Ian Hunchley and Alan Jones. A very evenly matched foursome, neither pair able to dominate, the 18th was reached and it was all-square. Being used to playing the long par five gave the home pair the advantage to gain victory.

Second pair teeing off were John and Richard Davies against Roy Bishop and John Fareham. The front nine were not good for John and Richard, only winning the second and being three down at the turn. Another hole was lost at the 11th, but a birdie by John on the 12th gave a glimmer of hope. A win at the 13th gave more hope, but it was dormie three at the 16th. Here Richard had a par to make it dormie two, John won the 17th to take the game to the wire. Both the home lads were on the green for three and the visitors conceded, a halved result was welcomed.

The third pair, Darrell Jones and Wayne Connett against A. Griffiths and R. Goodwin soon came to an end, the home pair winning 7/6, Wayne didn't have time for any jokes!

Not to be out done, the next pair, Barry Wood and Martin Davies made short work of their opponents, J.Civil and M. Sasko, winning at the 12th, 8/6.

Fifth pair off were Garfield Price and John Shaw vying with C. Sharp and L. Forrest. Steady play by Garfield and John gave them a 5/3 win.

Things were looking bright for Trefloyne but, the next three games saw a change of fortune, Dave Crowley and Jack Zeraschi lost by 2 to P. Johns and M. Jack, Steve Scanlon and Dennis Busby lost 3/2 to B. Onions and C. James, and Terry Harvey with Phil Rees went one down to P. Milne and H. Parry.

Ninth away were Graham Harrison and Steve Jones against T. Bailey and E. Kirby, a close game finally won by Graham and Steve 3/2.

Last off were Derek Jones and Keith Warmington taking on K. Duggan and M. Owen. Once more it was nip-and-tuck, the outcome in doubt until the 16th where a win by Derek and Keith saw them home 3/2.

The final score was 6.5 to 3.5 in favour of Trefloyne, a satisfying reversal of the away result. Both teams expressed their appreciation of an excellent meal, many thanks to the catering staff.
