Ladies' section
This month is a busy month for the ladies' section, with many club competitions going on, as well as qualifiers (writes C.C.).
We have got new ladies coming on and, as captain, I would like to meet them all soon. We have a Glenda Pearce 12-hole competition every other Thursday, so please come and join us.
The Dorrit Parry Vase on the May 17 was won by Sue Crowley. Well done Sue.
The weekly medal was won by Eunice Parkes coming in with nett 79, a good score considering the weather. Lind Coward also got a birdie.
Our third C&PLGA match was played on May 20 against Milford Golf Club. We had a good win and all the girls enjoyed the day. Next match is home to Glynhi on June 7.
On Saturday, the Logs played, but the weather turned on us, so some gave up. Three ladies managed to stay the course - well done girls, that's the spirit.
Sunday was the Whitewell Cup for mixed pairs. Beth and Dave Mcmann won on the back nine. Well done both. It was hard going as the weather was against us, with extremly high winds. Everyone was glad to get into the clubhouse and warm up. Roll on summer!
COMPETITION RESULTS
Tuesday's mid-week medal was played in such atrocious conditions that only three players stayed the course. The result was: 1. Wayne Connett, nett 80; 2. Lyn Latcham, 84; and 3. John James, 92.
The Wednesday night roll-up was low on numbers due to members going on their annual Irish jaunt, so the winner, Nick Johns, just about covered his fuel costs with his winnings.
A pro shop stableford was played on Saturday and the result was: 1. Alan Gawith 39 pts; 2. Rob Evans 38; and 3. Alan Griffiths 37.
Seniors section
A match at Glyn Abbey is always a challenge, as the course has numerous ditches and their players expect to win at home (writes J.J.)!
We were greeted by a heavy shower and more dark clouds looming downwind. Fortunately, they kept their moisture and the games commenced in sunshine.
This week, our captain, Trevor Lewis, chose Martin Davies as his partner. Unfortunately, Martin sustained a muscle injury the day before and was unable to play. With no reserve available, it was left to Darrell Jones to volunteer to let his partner accompany Trevor, namely Peter Scrivens. They took on Mike Wilkins and Tony Handcock, and with Mike playing off five, it was going to be a tough contest.
Trevor and Peter proved to be a match for the home pair, holding them to a draw.
Meanwhile, Darrell was teeing-off the 10th against Myrddin Rees and Lory Rees. Darrell had a very good round, but finally had to settle for a 2 and 1 loss.
The third tee was also in use and saw Graham Harrison and Jack Zeraschi against Mal Hughes and Lawson Williams. This was a game that could have gone either way, but ended all-square.
Next off were John James and Steve Scanlon versus Viv Jenkins and Mike Bowen, which proved to be a game of two halves. John and Steve were three up at the turn, despite Viv birdying the first, second and eighth; luckily Steve also had a birdie on the first. The lead went to four at the par three 12th, where Viv took four putts! (his birdies had all been long putts).
At this point, the tide turned, with two pars and two more birdies from Viv bringing it back to all-square. A long putt from John on the 17th for a net three put them back in front. With all four taking three shots to get on the 18th green, it was a tense situation, the nearest being about eight feet away. Steve was furthest away and failed to reach the hole. Viv was about 15 feet away and, just as he did with his four birdies, he found the hole. John now had to putt for the half, but a slight deviation saw the ball drift to the right, resulting in a drawn game.
Teeing-off the first, John Perrott and Wyn Hopkins took on Eddy Alderton and Brian Miles. John and Wyn blended well and won by 2 and 1.
Pat Casement and Derek Jones had a nightmare of a game against Bobby Sandow and Ken Chislet - the information sheet doesn't have the score!
Barry Wood and Stuart Mills had a good game against Brian John and Roger Davies, Barry renewing his rivalry with Roger which goes back over many years to their cricketing days. Barry and partner won the sledging, but lost the golf by 2 and 1.
Second from the third were Dave Crowley and Steve Jones against Rene Morris and John Phillips. Again it was a very close game, with Dave and Steve going to the 19th with a one up win.
Going off the 10th were Terry Harvey and Wayne Connett versus Dai Germain and Bernard George. Once more the result was in doubt until the final two holes, ending in a win for Terry and Wayne.
Overall, the match was a tie - a fair result and a very enjoyable day.
ALAN CHAPMAN COMPETITION
The second round of the Alan Chapman competition took place on Thursday and Derek Jones was victorious with a score of 37 pts; 2. Roger Cryer 36; 3. Steve Scanlon 35, after countback.
