Ladies' section

Lady captain and Ann Dassen went to the annual general meeting of the C&P LGU to be presented with the Three Counties League Shield after a runaway victory, gaining 17 out of a possible 18 points - well done girls!

The ladies' section has a lot to be proud of, especially with Ann Dassen now chairing the C&P LGU.

On January 22, a bogey competition was held in cold but favourable weather, and the winner was Ann Dassen level, 2. Liz Crockford -3, 3. Rita Collins -6.

On Tuesday, January 25, five of our ladies went to South Pembrokeshire Golf Club to play in the Mail on Sunday competition and lost by one putt after a very tight game. They were made very welcome, though, and congratulations go to South Pembs - we will support you all the way.

Sunday swingers

Eight ladies took part on a cold but gloriously sunny day and Gweneth Jewitt took the spoils.

Men's section

The weather probably had something to do with the low turnout of eight members for the pro-shop stableford on Tuesday, January 25. Winner was Darrell Jones, 31 pts, after countback, from Derek Jones, with John James third with 30 pts.

Twice as many members turned out for the seniors roll-up on Thursday, with thermals being the desired attire of the day. As is usual this winter, the greens were like concrete, which made putting a bit of a lottery, but wasn't it nice to see the ball bouncing on an extra 40 yards along the fairway! Winner was Martin Davies 38 pts, 2. G. Chapman 36, and 3. David Crowly 32.

Dormel trophy

This was the first silverware competition of the year and was held on Saturday in cold, but sunny conditions.

For the first time it was won by a lady member, the winner being Ann Dassen with 35 pts, winning after countback from Robin Lloyd, with Trevor Lewis coming third with 34.

The highest score of the day was recorded by Lewis Hurlow, who amassed 43 points, but he forgot to enter his handicap on the scorecard and was disqualified - that's a mistake he won't make again.

Never mind, Lewis, you were in good company, with the men's vice-captain and one other member making the same mistake.

The competition was well attended, with 37 members taking part, and we hope this bodes well for future events.

Shock in the

Sunday swingers

Not since Foinavon won the Grand National has such an outsider triumphed. The Sunday Swingers, with a good turnout of 13 members, was won by a rank outsider who played the best round of his short golfing career. As he collected his winnings, there were suggestions that he should use them to buy a new sombrero.

The winner was Stuart Mills with 44 pts, 10 ahead of Mike Ansell, who came second after countback, with Trevor Lewis third.

Not to worry lads, I'm sure it will be business as usual next week.

Quiz night

On Friday, the juniors held a quiz night which was well attended by 11 teams of five players and managed to raise £106 for the junior section.

Thank you all for attending as this is a major fundraising event for the junior section.

Thanks also to Mark and Sue Ensor for organising the event and especially to Mark, the question master, who took lots of stick throughout the evening from people who disagreed with his answers (by the way Mark it was vitamin D)

Don't forget to book your tee times for next Saturday's monthly medal competition.
