As the end of another year passes by, we'd like to take the opportunity to wish all our members a very happy New Year. It only seems like yesterday we were moaning about the snow and ice making golf almost impossible for all but the hardy few, but thankfully Boxing Day saw the snow disappear and it's great to see the course fully open.
Reflecting on another year of golf at Trefloyne in 2010, the new tees on the 14th, 9th, 7th and 2nd opened, along with the 4th and 5th for the ladies. The winter tree planting has begun, with the area between the 8th and 11th complete and hopefully, weather permitting, the divide between 15 and 17 will take place in January. After feedback from the December liaison meeting, certain areas of heavy rough will be cut back in the Spring.
An application for planning permission has been submitted in respect of a covered practice facility in Franklinson field which will provide the club with an all-year-round teaching academy and driving range. The planners have indicated this will be approved and we anticipate a decision early in the New Year.
The ladies team have once again had a tremendous year, winning the West Wales league for the second time in three years and Beth McMann and Fair Ball taking the West Wales ladies foursomes.
The men's Dyfed League and Super 6 teams had a tough year, despite fielding very strong teams in both areas. We hope that we can continue to develop these competitive sections of the club in 2011 through increased coaching, social, travelling opportunities, and look forward to any feedback you may have.
The senior men once again had a very successful summer season and consistently lead the pack in West Wales.
Our junior members have also had an excellent year, with Billy Truman and Matthew Adams representing the county, and Billy also being selected for Welsh Boys trials at Celtic Manor. Beth Morris and Harry Truman also had a fantastic year, with both representing the county, as well as picking up many titles along the way.
As a section, we held our second Junior Order of Merit event, with many of our home juniors doing well in a strong field of over 75 golfers. Congratulations to all those who took part and also represented the section all over the county. Greg Palin has taken over from Matthew Adams (who had a fantastic year as captain), with Steff Jones his vice.
The 2010 Club Championships proved to be a family affair, with Jeremy Morris taking the gent's title and Beth Morris the ladies'.
Well done to all those who have competed in both club, county and national events and we wish you continued success in 2011.
Mel and Chris's Captains Day was certainly one to be remembered and definitely one of the highlights of the 2010 calendar. The day was very well supported by all the members and the evening 'bash' was excellent, with a great band led by Trefloyne's answer to Phil Collins - Alan Griffiths.
The first Trefloyne Pro-Am was in September and we were all very proud James Maxwell led the field in his first professional event and we are sure he is going to go from strength the strength. The course also received very positive comments from both his fellow professionals and the PGA.
This year saw the Ryder Cup in Wales for the first time in the history of the event. Sarah and Tom represented Trefloyne on the Visit Wales stand (one of only two Welsh golf clubs at the event), Gareth supported Jim Mackenzie's green keeping team and Oliver was a coach on the PGA stand, the youngest professional ever to take part in the roadshow, which is testimony to his coaching ability.
We were also one of the leading fund-raisers for the Ryder Cup charity, Tenovus Cancer Research. Following on from this, we were shortlisted for 'Welsh Golf Club' of the year, narrowly losing out to St.. Davids (Harlech), although Richard Dixon was very impressed with the course and team at Trefloyne and has encouraged us to try again. We are determined to be the 'Best in Wales' next time.
With the New Year upon us we would like to understand what our members want from the Trefloyne experience. We therefore invite all members to an 'open forum' with your captains, vice-captains, committee members, professional, ground staff team and proprietors on January 12 at 7 pm. The agenda will be simply 'What do you want from your Golf Club?' It will cover all aspects of the Trefloyne experience and cover items such as competitions, committee functions, communication, general facilities, and the course set-up etc etc.
We really hope you can make it on the 12th, but if you can't, then please send us your thoughts by letter or email or contact one of your captains. This feedback is very important to us and we welcome all constructive comments and ideas.
It would also be very helpful if we had an idea of the number of members who can attend personally and would be grateful if you could email [email protected]">[email protected] or leave a message with Oliver in the Pro Shop if you intend to come.
Once again, we wish you a very happy New Year and hope to see you on the course in the near future - snow permitting!
