Tawe Vale Seniors

Open

Wyn Hopkins and Steve Jones, two (relatively young!) Seniors from Trefloyne recently won the Tawe Vale Seniors Open in Clydach.

The picture shows them waving their prize of some handy folding stuff.

Played in very humid conditions with a large field from 22 golf clubs, the pair got off to a flying start when Wyn birdied the par 5 second.

To the astonishment of their playing companions, Barry Wood and John James, Steve then proceeded to birdie both the fourth and sixth.

By the turn, 30 points had been accumulated which is just as well as Wyn and Steve then resumed their normal form.

A dogged single point at the 18th by Steve after the energy sapping heat of the afternoon proved to be the winning margin as the pair came home with 46 points pipping a Tawe Vale pairing to the honours.

Trefloyne Seniors

'Revenge is sweet' and that is exactly what happened when we entertained Newport Links Golf Club on Thursday, July 29.

When we played against them at Newport earlier in the year, they triumphed by 5.5 matches to 4.5.

However, on this occasion we managed to reverse that setback and won the fixture by five matches to three in a close and very friendly encounter.

Once again, solid golf was played by both teams and many of the matches were won or lost on the 17th or 18th greens.

The course was immaculate, perfectly manicured fairways and true and receptive greens, indeed the Newport golfers to a man, praised the course which was certainly high acclaim to the hardwork put in by the greenkeepers and all who help at the club.

Captain Graham Harrison, along with Bob Burks, took on the strong pairing of Chris James and Cliff Sharpe and after 18 holes of consistent golf, these four could not be separated, resulting in a half. Darrell and Derek Jones were next to grace the fairways against Alan Griffiths and Tony Morris. Another ding-dong battle ensued with the Jones boys winning on the 17th.

Our 'nap' pairing of Pat Casement and Keith Warmington were opposed by Phil Johns and John Collinbridge and they did not let the bookies down winning by 5 and 4.

Not to be outdone the 'Curry Club' pairing of Steve Jones and Barry Wood went one better by defeating Morys Rhys and Roger Goodwin (a cricketing buddy to Barry) by 6 and 4. This was quite a comical affair, with cricketing anecdotes being bandied about the course.

Next off were the 'Mighty Atoms', Gary Hopkins and Trevor Lewis, up against Terry Jones and Tony Bailey. The advantage of power shifted from one pair to the other at regular intervals, so a half at the end of their round seemed a fair result, although Gary reckons they would have won had his trolley not broken down! Wyn - he's after your hide!

John James, playing with our assistant pro Bob Maxwell, proved a little too strong for John Civil and Mike Underwood, winning by 3 and 2 playing solid golf. Denis Busby and Jack Zeraschi then had the unenviable task of trying to subdue the accomplished pairing of Eddie Kirby and John Farnham and unfortunately went down 5 and 4.

Last, but not least to go out, in a buggy were John Hargrave and Richard Davies, whilst their opponents Malcolm Jack and Roy Bishop trudged along behind them. What a battle this turned out to be, all-square after 17, only for Roy to sink a 20-footer on the last to give him and Malcolm a one hole victory.

After a delicious meal - thank you caterers, the captains made their speeches, with Graham thanking his team and the Newport team for such a fantastic day. In reply, Chris reiterated all that Graham had said and then gave the match result. Trefloyne 5 Newport Links 3, which was greeted by great cheering from Trefloyne.

Results: Graham and Bob halved with Chris and Cliff; Darrell and Derek beat Alan and Tony 2 and 1; Pat and Keith beat Phil and John 5 and 4; Steve and Barry beat Morys and Roger 6 and 4; Gary and Trevor halved with Terry and Tony; John and Bob beat Mike and John 3 and 2; Dennis and Jack lost to Eddie and John 5 and 4; John and Richard lost to Malcolm and Roy 1 down.

I heard a 'good un' during my round. Two Red Indian chiefs met up for a pow wow. One said: "I hear you have just taken a second wife." "Yes" was the reply, "one is called Mini Ha Ha and the other is Five Horses." After a deathly hush, the first chief said: "I know what Mini Ha Ha means, but what is Five Horses?" "Nag, Nag, Nag, Nag, Nag," came the reply!

Play to enjoy.

FOOTNOTE: Congratulations to Wyn Hopkins and Steve Jones on winning the Tawe Vale (Inco) four ball better ball seniors open competition with an amazing 46 points. The other two team members were John James and Barry Wood, who had 37 points, but were not amongst the prizes.

Ladies News

The mid-week stableford competition held on Tuesday, July 27, was entered by 16 of our lady members with some outstanding results.

Delyth Truman came first with an amazing 41 points, while daughter Hari Truman came in with a very close, but just as amazing 40 points. In third place was Lind Coward with a great 38 points. All three girls achieved a handicap reduction for their efforts, with Delyth dropping from 23 to 21, Hari dropping from 22 to 21 and Lind from 34 to 33 - well done to all. Delyth and Hari both returned a birdie on the day to win £7.00 pro-shop credit each.

On July 4, Fair Ball and Beth McMann represented Trefloyne in the Ladies West Wales foursomes tournament. They were three up at the turn and went on to win on the seventeenth hole 2 and 1. They will be competing in the semi-finals in the next round. Fair and Beth also competed in the Ashburnham ladies open on Thursday and came second overall. Well done to you both.

Men's news

On Tuesday, July 27, the members entered the pro's stableford competition, again with some very consistent high scores being returned. Jason Truman and Gavin Scotcher both returned 40 points on the day, but with Jason just creeping into first place on countback. Alan Chapman came third with 39 points and James Maxwell fourth with 37 points. Jason Truman got a handicap reduction from 22 to 21, while Alan Chapman reduced his handicap from 22 to 21. There were two birdie twos returned on the day, with Trevor Lewis scoring a two on the third hole and Jason Truman scoring a two on the 16th, both getting £10 pro shop credit each.

Continuing with the Truman family winning streak, Billy Truman had a hole in one on Sunday, and although overjoyed at the news, parents Delyth and Neil were slightly worried as to how big the bar tab might have been by the time they got there. Well done Billy!

Captain's Day News

The long and eagerly awaited Captain's Day took place on Saturday with a great time being had by all. Luckily even though we had been forecast showers, the rain stayed away for most of the day and it was great to see so many golfers on the course. With an excellent buffet enjoyed after the game, it was then onto the evening's festivities which included the presentations, comedian and band all of which were enjoyed by everybody.

Results for the day were as follows:

Ladies 1. Caroline Fletcher (38 points); 2. Delyth Truman (38); 3. Bethan Morris (37).

Men's 0 to 15 handicap: 1. Chris 'Tommo' Thompson (41); 2. John Broomhead (39).

Men's 16 to 28 handicap: 1. Colin Jenkins (40); 2. Alun Phillips (39).

Men's under 18 handicap overall champion: John Calleja, 45 points (definite handicap cut!).

Ladies nearest the pin - Joan Beynon; ladies longest drive - Delyth Truman; men's nearest the pin -Peter Cassidy; men's longest drive - John Calleja;

As a twist on the formalities, there was also trophy competition in which all the cards were mixed up and divided into teams of four randomly. The scores were then added together to find a winning 'dream team' score. With 109 points, the winning team consisted of John Calleja (hardly surprising), Martin Yates and P. Bradley.

The past captain's trophy was awarded to the lady and gent member who had previously been captain with the highest score. Winning the gent's past captain's trophy with 33 points was Keith Hubbard and for the ladies past captains trophy the prize went to Ann Dassen, who had 30 points.

The normal formal speeches ensued before we were entertained for the remainder of the evening by an excellent comedian, Jeff Alvey (I think you could have heard us laughing if you were standing on North Beach!) and then an excellent band American Express which includes one of our very own members Alan Griffiths.
