Men's Section

On Sunday, June 28, a team consisting of James Maxwell, Mathew McMann, Gavin and Elliot Scotcher and Andrew Burgess travelled to Clyne Golf Club to play Gower in the Welsh team scratch championship. We had been warned about the variety of wildlife at Clyne, but were unprepared for the sheep, cows and horses surrounding the tees, greens and fairways! It led to an interesting afternoon of golf, to say the least.

First off was Mathew, followed by Gavin, James, Elliot and Andrew. We soon realised we were in for a tough match as the highest handicap for the Gower side was six, the rest being two and three.

The match was very keenly contested, with the first two matches being won by Gower and the next two by Trefloyne, so it all depended on the last match. Unfortunately it was Gower who triumphed to earn a 3-2 win.

The undoubted star for Trefloyne was young Elliot Scotcher, who took on Gower's number one player (although he didn't know until after the match!)  and enjoyed a win of 5 and 4.

The match could have gone either way as the standard of golf on the day was terrific. With talent like this, Trefloyne golf should look forward to next year with anticipation.

On Sunday, June 28, our team of Meurig Evans, Paul Howells, Mark Ensor and Simon Arthur travelled to Milford Haven Golf Club to compete in the Magners Team Championships Area Final for Mid andWest Wales.

It was an individual stableford competition, with the best three out of four cards counting. The top two scores would go through to the grand final at Celtic Manor.

Our boys played extremely well and missed second place by three points. Better luck next year!

Seniors

On a wet and miserable Thursday afternoon we travelled to Priskilly Forest Golf Club to take on their seniors (writes Chip).

Due to the torrential rain, the start was delayed. Randall, their local weather forecaster, gazed at the sky and announced that the rain would stop in 20 minutes, and just as predicted, it did, only to come down heavier before the first four had reached the first green! A decision was made -the match goes on. What is that saying about mad dogs and Welshmen!

Captain Graham Harrison with Jack Zeraschi were first off against opposite numbers Brian Jones and Ted Rogers. Graham had a day to forget and he and Jack went down 7 and 6 to a superior pair.

Barry Thorne and Terry Harvey were next to try their luck against Bernard Jackman and Chris Booker. Barry and Terry complemented each other's game, so, if one was out then the other was in, and this proved too much for the hosts who lost 5 and 4.

Third off were Keith Warmington and Barry Wood opposed by Jim Douglas and Geoff Phillips. This proved to be a very close up and down match. One down at the turn, Keith and Barry pulled back and went two up with four to play. Alas it was not to be their day and they eventually lost on the 18th.

Pat Casement and Dave Crowley went two up after six against Sooty Kendrick and Big Ron Smith, only for the hosts to say "enough is enough" as they got in their buggy and drove off the course, conceding the match to Pat and Dave.

Read on - worse was to come. Next to brave the weather were Trevor Lewis and Steve Jones and with both playing solid golf they saw off Eddie Cleary and Gwyn Hughes 3 and 2.

The next match was between Darrell Jones with Peter Scrivens and Mike Sherrell with Phil Smith. The visitors played super golf and came in 4 and 3 winners.

As mentioned earlier, the next match caused quite a stir, to say the least. Both Roger Cryer and Mike Burke decided not to play in the rain and walked off the first tee, leaving Randall Griffiths and Cecil Phillips without a game. I wonder what the outcome of this will be? I am very keen to know this!

Bob Burks and Phil Rees were next off against Glyn Page and Peter Bellett. This was a nail-biter. All-square after 17, all to play for. On the 18th, Phil had to hole to win; he held his nerve, and plonk, in it went and victory was theirs.

John James and Gary Hopkins took on Brian Hopwood and Paul Bateman. Both the Trefloyne players were in good form as they romped home 4 and 2.

Someone commented on JJ's flowing white locks, saying he could easily give some to Gary! Get a haircut Mr J!

Glyn Jones and Bob Simpson had an excellent encounter against Jeff Harrington and Colin George. However, Jeff and Colin proved the strongest on the day and triumphed 3 and 1.

The battle weary, wet, bedraggled golfers trudged off the course ready for a nice warm shower, a change into clean dry clothes, a thirst quencher and finally down to the fantastic plate of steak and chips - and this was truly fantastic. After all had been sated, the raffle took place - I however had no luck at all.

The respective captains then addressed the players, firstly thanking them for turning up, but more so for playing under atrocious conditions.

Graham commented on the superb condition of the course and the greens, and thanked the caterers for their hospitality and the wonderful plate of food that was laid before us.

Results (Trefloyne first): Graham and Jack lost to Brian and Ted 7 and 6; Terry and Barry T beat Bernard and Chris 5 and 4; Keith and Barry W lost to Jim and Geoff 1 down; Pat and Dave beat Sooty and Ron 2 up; Trevor and Steve beat Eddie and Gwyn 3 and 2; Darrell and Peter beat Mike and Phil 4 and 3; Roger and Mike conceded to Randall and Cecil; Bob and Phil beat Glyn and Peter 1 up; John and Gary beat Brian and Paul 4 and 2; Glyn and Bob lost to Jeff and Colin 3 and 1

Our next match is away at St. David's on Thursday, July, 16, so please get your names down on the list as soon as possible. Graham has requested that if anyone wishes to enter any competition, then please read the notices on the board and put your names down in plenty of time.

Always remember - short and straight is much better than long and lost. Have a great golfing week.

LADIES

On Wednesday, June 24, Trefloyne played host to the first ever Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire LGA Greensome Foursomes Competition. It was a beautiful day, with entrants from throughout the two counties.

The scoring was excellent, with the eventual top three places sharing the same score of 38 points.

Winners were Vicky Thomas, of Carmarthen GC, paired with Rhian Walters, representing Derllys Court. Second prize went to Trefloyne pair Linda Kromrei and Heather Thorne, while third were another Trefloyne pair, Rita Collins and Liz Crockford.

Organiser Ruth James, of Carmarthen, remarked how wonderful the course was looking and how lovely the food was. She thanked the Beynon family for giving courtesy of the course and also thanked the ladies of Trefloyne for donating the raffle prizes. Ruth also thanked our ladies for their generous donation of £50 towards the start-up costs of the new County Association, which will be able to get our younger players national recognition without them having to join a second club in the Swansea/Cardiff area and show how strong ladies golf is in the region.

Trefloyne lady captain Ann Dassen was asked to present the prizes and was able to thank those organisers present for their hard work and commitment. As there were no twos on the day, a draw was made and, along with the raffle, most returned home with something - along with their golfers' sun tan!

Our Tuesday stableford competition last week was also played in very hot conditions. However, Heather Thorne obviously thrives in such conditions and won the day with a magnificent 43 points. Congratulations Heather as you have now dropped three shots down to 20 handicap.

Second on the day was Barbara Evans, welcomed back from South Africa, with 32 points and third was Rita Collins with 31 points.

On Saturday, we played our July monthly medal in changeable conditions. Those off first had it very damp, with Sue Shooter returning an excellent nett 70 early on. However, great friend Vicky Burks was to earn herself a humorous phone call from Sue and a two-shot handicap reduction when she beat her with a nett 69 later in the afternoon. Young Hari Truman also returned a wonderful nett 72 (after recovering from her broken wrist), so congratulations to all three for your handicap reductions.

Squad training with Oliver for all of our ladies and girls who have played for our Three Counties team will take place for the first time next Thursday, July 16, between 6 and 7 pm. It will continue fortnightly throughout the summer at a cost of £5 per session, alternating with the Glenda Pearce Competition. Attend when you can. Please bring your clubs unless pouring with rain, when the training will take place indoors.

Professional/lady captain charity challenge: Full details are in the clubhouse. Any pair (mix of women, men or juniors) may challenge Oliver and Ann, with proceeds going to charity. Please contact the Pro Shop to arrange a time with us. This is a fun challenge (not a golf examination) and we hope he can get to meet a lot more of you this way!
