Seniors
Due to a late withdrawal, Trefloyne travelled to face South Pembs with 17 players (writes Chip). However, when we entertained them last month, they could only muster 12 players and this was again the case this time. The five extra players - Barry Thorne, John Sheppard, Peter Scrivens, Bob Simpson and Barry Wood - who were given courtesy of the course, played amongst themselves and had a lovely day.
The weather was fantastic for golf as the captains and their partners shook hands and prepared to play. Graham Harrison and Bob Burks (T) were up against Fred Mountney and Dai Evans (SP). After three holes the hosts went three up, but the guests fought back to level the scores when Graham holed a 20-foot putt after Bob had won the previous hole. However, Fred got a birdie three on the 15th and with Dai went on to win the match 2 and 1.
This squared the series 1-1 between these four golfers.
Next off were Darrell Jones an Jack Zeraschi, opposed by big Mac McCormack and Gerry Keys. Darrell and Jack played such good golf that big Mac was heard muttering about Jack's handicap as he won yet another hole!
Off third were John James and Dave Crowley, who took on Brian Williams and partner Ray, whose surname escapes us. This was a really tight game, with John and Dave taking the spoils 2 and 1.
The fourth foursome was Terry Harvey and Trevor Lewis against Mike Leighs and Dai Rees. Terry, back after a week of rest, hit his drives so far that Mike moaned throughout, saying binoculars were needed to see his ball! This match turned out to be a 'two horse' race, with Terry providing the brawn, allowing a 5 and 4 victory.
Gary Hopkins partnered by Steve Jones took on Mike Williams and Keith Leverton. This ding-dong match was all-square going to the 18th. After three putts were conceded on the green, it was left to Steve to hole a three-foot putt to win the match. Taking what seemed an age to line up his putt and after a wiggle or two all was steady. A swing of the putter and the ball scurried straight towards the hole, only to veer off when within inches of winning the hole and match. However, a half was a very fair result.
Going out last were Gerald John and Derek Jones against Harold James and Angus Hayward. What a good match this was, see-sawing one way and then the other. Derek reckons his and Gerald's stamina won the day as they ran out 3 and 1 winners.
This made the match score 4.5 - 1.5 to Trefloyne.
After an excellent meal, both captains thanked their respective teams and commented on the 'fantastic' condition of the course. It was left to Graham to thank the caterers for the delicious meal and to issue the result.
Results: Graham and Bob lost to Fred and Dai 2 and 1; Darrell and Jack beat Mac and Gerry 3 and 2; John and Dave beat Brian and Ray 2 and 1; Terry and Trevor beat Mike and Dai 5 and 4; Gary and Steve halved with Mike and Keith; Gerald and Derek beat Harold and Angus 3 and 1.
Footnote: Golf is like a love affair. If you don't take it seriously, it's no fun, if you do take it seriously, it breaks your heart!
Lady Captain's
Away Day
On Wednesday, May 27, despite torrential rain, 13 ladies set off from Trefloyne on the first of the lady captain's away days this year to Newport Links.
Whilst enjoying the bacon rolls, the rain eased, but sadly the wind picked up! Undaunted, the draw was made and lady captain Ann Dassen teed off first to show the girls the way, as she had only played the course the week before.
Rita Collins caused much hilarity by getting the nearest the tee on the first hole and was given a rousing cheer when she went on to gain her first point on the fifth! Luckily we can joke about this as she went on to get a good score and quite frankly has been playing beautifully recently.
Fair Ball had a blonde moment when she asked, as her 'three off the tee' had sailed past the longest drive, could she move the marker... I think the clue is the three in the title!
Sue Ensor, who played really well, probably had the funniest shot of the day when she nearly hit an 'immooovable' object on the eighth, launching her tee shot into the field next door!
Although the wind made sure we all looked less than wonderful (apart from little Hari, of course), all finished the course and enjoyed the wonderful scenery.
Ann presented the prizes afterwards. Longest drive was won by Rita Collins and nearest the pin by Fair Ball. Winner of the stableford competition was Anne Morgan who won a lovely pair of Footjoy golf shoes. Second was Sue Ensor. All had a gift on the day and had a fun time.
Mid-Week Medal
Last Tuesday saw a good entry for the June Mid-Week Medal. We are keeping our Tuesday competition open now to allow our ladies who work, a chance to enter afterwards.
Results were given the next day and in second place was Beth McMann with a nett 78, but the winner by far was Ann Dassen with a wonderful nett 68. She has dropped from 28 down to 25 and is absolutely delighted. Her long game has been very good recently, but her putting lesson with Oliver has already started to pay dividends.
She is very relieved to have come down at long last, and so are most of the other ladies as she has won far too many prizes recently!
Fun Night Tonight
A few tee times are still available for the 'Three Clubs' nine-hole competition tonight (Friday).
As usual, there will be food available when we come in and prizes for all categories and the raffle for the rest of us! Men, ladies and juniors welcome! Ring the Pro Shop on 01834 845639.
A Note From
Your Pro
I was fortunate enough to play in my first AJO Memorial Bowl at the weekend, and a big thank you to the members of Tenby Golf Club for such a warm welcome.
As always, the course was presented very well, although it played extremely tough in what was only a calm breeze - a quick reminder of how demanding links golf can be.
Congratulations to Gavin Scotcher, Gareth Knight, Ann Morgan and Bethan Morris, who lead the Trefloyne charge going into the home leg. I wish them and all competitors the best of luck for tomorrow (Saturday). I hear from a very reliable source that good weather is forecast.
Futures afternoon: Last Sunday we held our first Texas Scramble of the season, with 15 juniors teaming up to post the best score. The eventual winners, who receive £4 of shop credit each, were Elliot Scotcher, Polly Scotcher, Ben Turner and George Taylor with a fantastic nett score of 26.2.
This weekend's Futures competition at 1 pm will be an 18-hole stableford competition.
Junior coaching: Our free junior member coaching continues tomorrow (Saturday) with the second team squad kicking off at 2 pm and the feeder squad at 3.30 pm. Please give me a call to register any new junior members.
Tip of the week: Long rough is a common occurrence on most good golf courses at present and can often cause major problems to an errant tee shot or incorrect club selection. When trying to advance your shot from the deep rough, firstly select a more lofted club as there will be less surface area for the grass to grab hold of. Place most of your weight on the left side (right-handed golfer), and position the ball in the centre of your stance. A steep angle of attack is required, trying to pick the club up very quickly in the back swing. A shorter back swing followed by a longer follow through emphasises the acceleration required through impact to cut through the thick grass. The club head has to be speeding up... not slowing down.
