PGA Professional Oliver Duckett Joins Trefloyne

After many long interviews and family discussions, Trefloyne is pleased to announce the appointment of Oliver Duckett as our new PGA head professional.

Having waited for the right opportunity to come home to Tenby, Oliver will be joining the team at Trefloyne from April 25.

Oliver was an amateur schools international at the age of 18, and made the decision to turn professional and later qualified as a PGA professional after a year as assistant professional to Mark Hawkey. Oliver then took up the role of senior assistant professional at Radyr Golf Club, where he became a Ryder Cup Wales 2010 coach as well as a Cardiff County Schools coach.

It was from Radyr in 2007 that Oliver took the opportunity to further his career to become senior PGA professional at Tyrells Wood Golf Club in Surrey. Throughout his time with the club, Oliver has been solely responsible for the running of the academy, a well-structured programme offering group and individual coaching, as well as regular rules seminars and competitions.

Trefloyne is renowned for its junior and ladies golf development and Oliver is looking forward to taking Trefloyne to the next level, not just for the juniors and ladies, but is also very keen to encourage men's golf development. A structured golf academy for all is to be created, along with squad and team coaching and a vision to create a centre of excellence.

Trefloyne will be pleased to welcome experienced and beginners alike to the summer taster days, which will be advertised in this publication.

Sarah said: "It is a very exciting time at Trefloyne, with the recently opened Teising restaurant and hotel accommodation, the 'Longbury' woodland development and upgrades to the golf course, and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome Oliver to the team and wish him every success in his new position".

Oliver will be opening his shop and available for lessons from April 25.

Ladies Triumph Again in Mail

on Sunday

Last Thursday, Trefloyne played host to the ladies of South Pembs. in round three of the Mail on Sunday Classic. We seem destined to play our matches this year in wet weather. Undaunted and remarkably cheerful, both teams of five set off on what was to become a very close match. After nine holes, it was neck and neck, with three matches all-square and one from each team up on their opponent.

Caroline Fletcher had a fine win for us on the 12th hole, even after giving 11 shots. Welcome back Caroline!

Supporters braved the damp and collected behind the pond on the 15th to watch the other four matches progress.

Sue Shooter won her match for Trefloyne on 17th hole, with Anne Morgan losing to Sharon Kaye on the 17th. Both Heather Thorne and Vicky Burks made the spectators wait until the 18th hole before sinking good putts to win their matches.

The eventual score was a 4-1 win to Trefloyne, but this seems an unfair reflection for the brave effort and good golf also played by the South Pembs. team of Novella Davies, Ros Williams, Mary Mountney, Sharon Kaye and Ria Phillips.

This was reflected in the speech given in the clubhouse where they were all given a good welcome.

Ladies' Results

Last Tuesday saw 14 entrants for the stableford competition, with a fine win for Del Truman with 38 points, with Bethan Morris second on 35 and a better back nine than Ann Dassen, also on 35 points.

Last weekend the ladies played for the JOP Easter Cup, donated by Colin and Julie Jenkins.

Entrants chose two of the four stableford competitions played over the weekend as their silverware entry.

Sue Shooter was the overall winner with a total of 76 points, Kristalle Blum came second on a countback with Del Truman with an overall 72 points.

Congratulations to all three ladies, who have all seen handicap reductions.

trefloyne seniors v haverfordwest

For the third week running, Trefloyne was the host club, this time to their counterparts from Haverfordwest.

Our 'Captain Fantastic' AKA Graham Harrison had asked all his team to assemble at the clubhouse by 11.30 am ready for a 12 noon tee-off. Alas, this request fell on many deaf ears, leaving Graham running around like a 'blue . . . fly', making sure all his selected team were present and correct in time for the scheduled start time.

After several unmentionable expletives, calm was finally restored and play commenced on time. Once again we were fortunate to have the use of both first and 10th tees. Aren't we lucky at Trefloyne to have these tees so accessible to the clubhouse.

Leading off from the first were Graham 'Fantastic' Harrison, partnered by Derek Jones, who were up against the formidable Haverfordwest pairing of Dick Cross and Don Twigg. Two pars on the first two holes by Graham enabled the hosts to go two up and after a half on the third, Haverfordwest won the long par five, fourth hole when Dick holed a par putt.

Graham and Derek then decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and won the next five holes, and so at the turn were leading by six holes. Haverfordwest managed to halve and to win the 11th and 12th holes, but a superbly played 'Quarry' hole, parred by Graham, ensured a six and five win for the home pair.

Hot on their heels was the 'Monday' pairing of Glyn Jones and Barry Wood, against Clive Frankton off eight and Ray Woodason. Barry started off great guns by winning the first and second holes to par, but this was soon to alter at the next hole. Full of confidence after the first two holes, he teed up his ball, swung the club (as though he meant business) struck the ball as sweet as a nut, only to see it fly horribly left into thick rough behind the left-hand bunker, never to be seen again. What a way to come back down to earth!

Glyn did his best to recover the situation, but Clive got a three to win the hole. After halving the fourth and fifth, the hosts won the next two to par putts. Clive and Ray won the eighth and a missed putt from 18 inches on the ninth halved that hole. Glyn and Barry were three up after nine holes. Ray parred the 10th to win the hole. The 11th was halved. Glyn had a three to win the 12th and repeated the win on the 'Quarry' hole after Barry's second shot scurried down the chasm. Ray won the 14th to par. Clive did likewise on the 15th which saw the score at two up with three to play in favour of Trefloyne. Halves on the 16th and 17th enabled Glyn and Barry to victory by two and one. An excellent match totally enjoyed by the foursome.

Third off tee one were Daryl Jones and Phil Rees and opposing them were David Colston and Richie Williams. After many very close holes, the Haverfordwest pairing took control and led by three after nine and finally won the match four and three after the win on the 15th.

The new pairing of Keith Warmington and Graham Longster (welcome to the seniors Gra) followed against Les Hastings and Terry Gwilliam; this proved to be a real nail biter. Keith and Graham won the first, lost the second, and so it continued until the 17th. Graham found the green with his third shot and holed his putt for a four to take Trefloyne one up. A half on the 18th and they emerged victorious, nerves ajangling!

Last off the first tee were Terence Morgan and John Bancroft, followed by Jim Morgan and Dave Griggs. The first was won by John, holes two and three were halved, then Terence took over to win the next five holes. Haverfordwest won the ninth to pull one back. Terence then won the next two to go dormie seven up at the 12th. Jim and Dave showed their mettle to win 12, 13 and 14 (what a fightback). Needing only a half to win the match at the 15th, this was duly done and Terence and John triumphed four and three.

Now for those who started on the 10th. Going first were the 'two Bobs', Burks and Simpson, against Terry Rees and Mike Robinson. With a lack of information regarding this match, it must have been a very tight game, see-sawing one way then the other, as the result of half indicates.

Following this exciting game, Pat Casement and Jack Zeraschi took on Alan Jones and Roy Taylor. After a half on the 10th, Alan and Roy won both 11 and 12 with birdies. Pat and Jack hit back immediately, winning the 13th and 15th. Haverfordwest won the 16th and Trefloyne won the 18th to go all-square. Without any info of the next nine holes, we can assume it followed the same pattern as before, as the match was halved.

Third foursome off the 10th were Barry Thorne and Dennis Busby against Roger Jones and Glyn Miles. Roger, playing off nine, proved to be a 'thorn' in the sides of the Thorne/Busby partnership (pardon the pun). After playing cracking golf, the Haverfordwest pairing were two up at the turn. The first three holes on the front half were halved, as were the sixth and ninth, and the other four holes were shared, to give Jones and Miles a two and one win.

Penultimately off the 10th, John Hargrave (late of South Pembs) partnered by David Owen took on Mike Williams and Ken Owen. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a rather one-sided match, with the Haverfordwest pair trooping to a seven and six victory.

During this match, someone was heard asking his partner - Is it a daff? Is it a canary? No! it's David decked out in a bright yellow rainproof jacket! Although he and John lost their match, David remained 'chirpy' to the end!

Last off the 10th was last season's captain John James ably supported by Wyn Hopkins, who were up against Colin Bell and Alan McDonald. Winning their first hole with a bogey putt by Wyn, the Trefloyne pairing continued to dominate this half of the course and when John shot a par on the 18th with a superb approach and putt, off they trudged to the first.

Once again John and Wyn rather outplayed Colin and Alan to win comfortably by two and one. The score is not a true reflection of the match, with Wyn playing a big part in the victory.

He can do it when it matters! I told you so Gary! Remember the Belmont?

Results (Trefloyne names first): Graham and Derek beat Dick and Don six and five; Barry W and Glyn beat Clive and Ray two and one; Daryl and Phil lost to David C and Richie four and three; Keith and Graham L beat Les and Terry G one up; Terence and John B beat Jim and David G four and three; Bob and Bob halved with Terry R and Mike R; Pat and Jack halved with Alan J and Roy; Barry T and Dennis lost to Roger and Glyn two and one; John H and David lost to Mike W and Ken seven and six; John J and Wyn beat Colin and Alan Mc two and one.

An extremely interesting and hard fought match played with good humour resulted in a 6-4 win for Trefloyne to make it a hat-trick of victories, albeit all on our home course.

Once again many thanks to Arno and Helen for the excellent after-golf meal enjoyed by all, and to the staff for their extreme hospitality.

Finally, well done the greens staff for the well manicured and pristine condition of the course.
