junior presentation evening

Last Friday night saw the marquee at Trefloyne filled with juniors and their families, for the end of year presentation and dinner.

This is where all the trophies won throughout the year by the juniors are handed out, plus certificates for the junior clinics held from summer to autumn. It's also where the junior captaincy is handed over.

Mike Burke (junior organiser) opened the evening by welcoming everyone to this event, including the men's captain and his wife, the ladies' captain and junior captain. Owners Kim and Joan sent their apologies as unfortunately they had a prior engagement.

On the beautifully decorated tables laid a running order for the evening. This started with the presentation for the Tri-Golf to level seven pupils who had attended Christine's clinics during the season, with all the children receiving certificates for their achievements.

The carvery dinner followed on from this, with a choice of meats and vegetables served out by head chef and restaurant owners, Arno and Helen. Helen then took the orders for the mouth-watering desserts.

The evening carried on with the main presentations, starting with the level eight clinic pupils. Level eight is the final level of the junior clinic programme and the hardest. The pupils have to complete a series of difficult tasks, including mid-range bunker shots, a nine-hole short game test, plus a long game accuracy and length test. They also have to play the full 18-hole course, to show they have the concept of the game, including rules and etiquette, as well as understanding about fitness and nutrition. Not only do the pupils receive a certificate, but also a lovely trophy engraved with their name.

Recipients of these trophies were Bryony Cunningham, Ben Turner, Olivia Bradbury and Billy Truman.

With the help of Mike and junior captain Sam Fletcher, the major trophies were presented as follows:

Monthly Medal winners: April - Kristalle Blum; June -Samu Jaakola; September - division one, Kristalle Blum, division two, Ben Turner.

Foursomes Championship: Kristalle Blum and Hari Truman.

Junior Championship: Girls 18-hole stableford - Kristalle Blum; best nett - Jack Murphy; best gross - Sam Fletcher.

Carl French Junior Matchplay: Winner - Nick Blum; runner-up - Samu Jaakola.

Men's captain, Dave McMann, was then asked to say a few words and present the last two trophies of the evening.

He thanked everyone for supporting the clever, talented juniors the club has, and added: "With the enthusiasm that Christine gives and teaches and the support from Mike and the junior captains we've had, the standard could only be described as first rate."

Dave then presented the Dyfed County U13s Championship trophy to Samu Jaakola, which was held for the first time this year at Tenby in July. And the Dyfed Junior Order of Merit to James Maxwell.

Finally, it was time for Sam Fletcher to hand over his captain's tee shirt to the new captain for 2008/9, Dan Edwards.

Sam thanked Chris and Mike for all their help throughout the year and wished Dan the best of luck. Sam then presented Chris and Mike with flowers and a nice bottle of alcohol.

Dan spoke of how much he would enjoy his new role of junior captain and announced that the vice-captain would be Samu Jaakola. He then handed Christine a lovely bunch of flowers.

The evening concluded with a raffle in which many prizes were won. And with Christine promising she will come back from her well-deserved break, in sunny Australia.

Thanks must go to Mike, Sam and Dave for their help with the presentations; to Helen, Arno and the team for the food; and last, but not least, to Graham in the bar for keeping thirsts quenched all evening.

But, the biggest thank you has to go to Christine, for teaching all the juniors. Come rain or shine, you can always find her, on the many practice areas, teaching her pupils the skills they will need to go on and become great golfers. We wish you, Kristalle and Nick, a safe journey and have a wonderful holiday. Merry Christmas.
