seniors
On Thursday, September 18, 20 players from our neighbours at Tenby came to Trefloyne for our first meeting this season. After the recent rains, the course was beginning to dry, but there was very little run on the fairways. This effectively made the course longer and favoured the long drivers. With home advantage as well, the result was a resounding win for Trefloyne by 7.5 to 2.5.
Results were: John James and Colin Jenkins won 7/6 against Roy Morgan and Roy Grundry; Alan Chapman and John Cliffe won 1 up against Ken Gouldsbrough and Alan Yates; Gary Hopkins and Dennis Busby lost 7/5 to Stan Hudson and John Cook; Pat Casement and Keith Warmington won 2 up against Peter Williams and Geoff Aston; Darrell Jones and Derek Jones won 3/2 against David Evans and Rod Clarke; Ivan Kirk and Trevor Lewis won 6/4 against Des Stone and Owen Monaghan; Mike Burke and Bob Maxwell lost 5/4 to Bob Howse and Derek Bath; Roger Cryer and John Bancroft won 2 up against Clifton John and Brian Morgan; Graham Harrison and Bob Burks won 3/2 against Tony Morgan and Nigel Rimmel, finally, Jack Zaraschi and Barry Wood halved with Martin Nielen and Malcolm Arlott.
On September 25, the Seniors travelled to Carmarthen with high hopes of repeating the previous week's victory. In a close fought encounter, the home team narrowly won by 4.5 to 3.5. This could have been four-all had our captain, John James, holed a two-foot putt on the 18th for a half! Being four down at the 14th, the Carmarthen pair began sinking putts from all over the temporary greens and won the last four holes.
Results were: John James and Dennis Busby halved with Mick Fenney and Selwyn Hunphries; Graham Harrison and Bob Burks lost 5/4 to Ray Sinden and Stuart Burby; Pat Casement and Keith Warmington won 7/6 against Neville Richards and Gordon Jeremy; Barry Wood and Gary Hopkins won 3/1 against Tony Hurd and Dai Elias; Terry Harvey and Trevor Lewis went 1 down to Gerwyn Davies and Tony Reed-Smith; Alan Chapman and Derek Jones lost 4/3 to Graham Williams and Alun Davies; Les Grascall and Steve Jones halved with Fred Cook and Ben Bethell; Jack Zaraschi halved with Tommy Myo.
There is a Seniors outing on October 14 and 15, playing Cradoc on the Tuesday, staying overnight at the Lion in Builth Wells, and playing the Builth course on Wednesday. Five places are left - contact John James on 811411 for more details.
FINALS WEEKEND
After a summer of indifferent weather, Trefloyne was bathed in sunshine for finals weekend.
First match of the day was the Millforge ladies singles, played between Fair Ball and junior Bethan Morris. It was a match that saw the lead alter from Fair being two up after six to all-square at the turn. The final result was in favour of Bethan 4 and 3.
Ben Price and Harri Jaakola played the final of the Scratch Cup. Ben had the upper hand all day and defeated Harri 4 and 3.
The men's Laidler singles cup final was between Paul Howells and Trevor Lewis. Trevor galloped out the blocks and was two up after two holes. The match continually changed hands, with many balls being lost and very few holes being putted out on. Paul turned the match around and was three up after 15, only to lose the 16th and 17th. Paul staved off Trevor by halving the last to win one up.
The final of the men's Paddock Inn pairs was won by new combination, Meurig Evans and Mark Ensor. They defeated Alan Griffiths and Harvey Lloyd 2 and 1.
Rob Evans and Simon Arthur contested the men's Wesley House singles final. Simon took the early lead and went to two up after making birdie down the fifth. He had a chance to move to three up on the eighth, but missed. Rob fought back and won the 10th and 12th and the match was all-square. Rob stormed home, winning the 14th, 15th and 17th to take the trophy 3 and 1.
The Carl French junior matchplay final was contested between Samu Jaakola and Nick Blum. Nick took the early lead, winning the first, but the match was all-square after six holes. Nick kept his cool and went on to defeat Samu 5 and 4.
The match of the day was the ladies' Pembroke Pairs. Fair Ball was partnered with Anne Morgan against Sue Shooter and Vicky Burks. Sue and Vicky held the cards for most of the day, getting to three up, before Fair and Anne fought back and forced the match to extra-time.
As dusk was approaching, the terrace crowd took beers to the 19th and followed behind. The match was forced down the 20th and all players had putts to win, but it was Vicky who holed to give Sue and Vicky the match. Unfortunately for Fair, although contesting both the ladies' finals, she walked away empty-handed.
There was only one final remaining, the mixed Alice Shapcott trophy and this was played Sunday morning. The fog delayed play for over an hour and many cups of coffee were drunk and players were feeling that the fog was never going to lift. A decision was made between contenders Michelle Richards and Paul Howells and Ann Dassen and Alan Chapman to venture off and try to hit it straight. Michelle and Paul controlled the match and defeated Ann and Alan 3 and 1.
Thanks must go to all the referees for their time and decision-making over the weekend, and don't forget that all winners are now eligible to play in the Masters Shield and All Winners trophy on Saturday, October 11.
