Mail on Sunday team: Sunday, March 16, Sheila Phillips, Michelle Richards, Linda Kromrei, Heather Thorne and Ann Morgan all trooped off to Ashburnham Golf Club. They were representing Trefloyne in the second round of the Mail on Sunday team event, having been lucky enough to get a bye in the first round. The team, being selected in handicap order, were a little nervous about playing Ashburnham on their home course, as Sheila was the only one with any real experience of the course; Linda had only played it once, while the others had not even been there. Once a little light refreshment and some practice on the putting green had been taken, they took their turn off the first tee. Handicapped by a bad cold, Sheila enjoyed having shots on someone instead of always having to give shots away. Although only three shots, she reckons her partner Olwyn only made three mistakes, so having those shots was not a lot of good and Sheila eventually lost on the last hole. Michelle was four down at the turn and did not expect to win enough holes to win her match, but remarkably she came back by winning six holes for a two and one win. Heather was digging her way to Australia as she was so unlucky with the infamous bunkers in the beginning and, although she played really well throughout the rest of the game, she was unable to retrieve her game as Cath her partner could do no wrong. Ann, not being a nervous person normally, said that she was so nervous that she couldn't keep her hand still to put her ball marker down on the green. Although we are not sure if it was nerves or the results of the amber nectar drunk to calm the nerves the night before. Somehow she managed to calm herself enough to win. Linda, having not played much throughout the winter, was having a reasonable game, with it being win one, lose one and the occasional half, and was enjoying her game until she reached the 15th hole as by then the rest of the team had finished their games and suddenly there was an influx of onlookers come to watch. The overall match, it turned out, was 2-2 and it all depended on this final match. No pressure then! Linda unfortunately lost the next hole to go one down. On the 16th hole her partner Ann made an error, bringing it back to all-square. They then halved the 17th, leaving the 18th the crucial hole. They went down the fairway shot for shot (including a bunker each). On the green, both had long putts and both ended up falling about four-foot short. With Linda just that little bit further away and having to putt first, she took it nice and calmly, putting the ball into the hole, leaving Ann to have putt out to halve the hole. All eyes were now on Ann, only to watch the ball lip around the cup for her to lose the match. Trefloyne had won! So with handshakes and commiserations, they all went back to the clubhouse for refreshments before their journey home. Final results: Sheila Phillips (11) lost to Olwyn Davies (5) 1 hole; Michelle Richards (18) bt Jolan Greville (10) 2 and 1; Linda Kromrei (21) bt Ann Francis (12) 1 hole; Heather Thorne (23) lost to Cath Jones (18) 7 and 5; Ann Morgan (26) bt Sophie Anderson (7) 5 and 3.
