SENIORS GO DOWN AT NEWPORT
On Thursday, May 3, the seniors enjoyed the hospitality of the members of Newport, Pembrokeshire, for an away match. The course was in excellent condition, especially considering the lack of rain over the last several weeks, and on the day the weather was almost perfect for the game, with uninterrupted sunshine accompanied by just a light breeze. The new nine holes in the course of construction were seeded about two weeks ago and a green bloom is just beginning to show through. The greens and tees had already been prepared some time ago and the full 18 holes should be open for play next year. The building works are still progressing and as a result no food was available at the club and likewise no shower facilities, but excellent alternative eating arrangements had been made by the club which were much appreciated. The golf unfortunately was not quite as good. Trefloyne, to the embarrassment of the club and the disappointment of our opponents, was only able to field 18 players and accordingly one match was therefore conceded. Of the remaining nine matches, four were lost, three were won and two were halved. Details were: Matches won - Mike Burke and Alan Chapman, Bob Burkes and Derrick Jones and Gary Hopkins and Glyn Jones; matches halved - Graham Harrison and Alan Hicks and Trevor Lewis and John Sheppard; matches lost - Brian Norman and Mike Evans, Keith Wormington and Denis Busby, Pat Casement and Garfield Price and Barry Woods and Steve Oulsnam. Forthcoming events: Seniors versus Glyn Abbey at home, May 17, and Seniors Open Championship on May 24 (tee-off 8.30 to 10.30 am).
ladies April results
The ladies section at Trefloyne had a packed month of events, with some superb scores certainly living up to the wonderful weather that we were been lucky enough to have played in. The first stableford on the third was won by Julie Jenkins in division one with 32 points and by Jill Morris in the blue belles section also with 32; then new member Anne Dassen carded a fine 79 to win the mid-week medal from Gwyneth Jewitt with 82. On the 14th, Liz Crockford, in fantastic form, took the next medal with a superb 68, followed by Linda Kromrei with 73. The 12-hole stableford also produced some fine scoring from Liz, winning her section with 23 points from Olive Maher, also on 23 points, and Sue Ash took the blue belles division with a very well earned 27 points. During Easter weekend, the ladies took the opportunity to play in the Jop Cup held over the four days of the bank holiday and, without doubt, it was low handicapper Sheila Phillips who stole the show with very consistent scoring of 41 and 37 points to give her an overall total of 78, a clear 12 points ahead of her nearest rival, Linda Kromrei on 66 points. Well done Sheila, and a reduction in that handicap too! There were some exceptional individual scores, with Kristalle Blum (only nine-years-old) scoring 44 points on Easter Saturday to clearly win that day, Gwyneth Jewitt on Friday with 33, Liz Crockford on Sunday with 34 and on Monday Sue Crowley, who has not been playing for very long, came in with a tremendous 47 points! Another well won handicap reduction there too. The next cup played for in April was the much- loved Dorrit Parry trophy and this time it was Fair Fraser's weekend, who, having threatened to drop that handicap several times with some almost there scores, came in with a resounding 40 points to clinch a drop to 31, and she probably won't be long before another cut either, considering her play in France last weekend! Linda Kromrei was second with another consistent 37 points. Finally, to finish off the month, we played the Challenge Bowl on a gorgeous sunny day and Michelle Richards became our very worthy representative in the next round with a fine 71, followed by the very steady Gwyneth Jewitt on 72.
