MIXED FORTUNES FOR SENIORS

The first Seniors League match of the season was played against Milford at Trefloyne on March 29. Led by this year's captain, Brian Norman, the team scored a resounding victory, winning by 11 games to nil. Unfortunately, the score sheet mysteriously disappeared and was last seen with the opposing team - no reward for its return! On April 5, Trefloyne Seniors hosted a team from Carmarthen Golf Club. Once again the weather was clement and the course was in excellent condition. The results sheet was also well guarded this time. First to tee-off were Brian Norman and Bill Myers. Their opponents were G. Davies and M. Fenney. Brian and Bill had a fine round, coming in with a 6 and 4 victory. Was it going to be another good day for Trefloyne? No, not to be, the next two games went to the visitors, with Gary Hopkins and Alan Chapman losing 3 and 2 to R. Sinden and T. Smith. Also going down 3 and 2 were Bob Burks and Glyn Jones, losing to R. Mitchell and T. Hurd. Things looked a bit brighter when John James and Ivan Kirk defeated A. Evans and F. Robinson, 4 and 3, the visitors only winning the 10th and 13th. Garfield Price and John Shaw took to a buggy against K. Edwards and F. Cook. The pairing were well matched and came in all-square. Similarly, Pat Casement and Graham Harrison shared the honours with J. Evans and I. Jones. Seventh out were Mike Evans and Keith Wormington, taking on N. Richards and S. H-Jones. They had a close game, Mike and Keith eventually winning 2 and 1. Another close encounter saw Barry Wood and Steve Oulsnam losing 3 and 2 to D. Elias and P. H-Jones. Steve was so disorientated, he could not remember where he had left his car! Terry Harvey and John Cliff were unlucky not to win, losing on the 18th to T. Gleepy and G. Jeremy. With Roger Cryer and John Shepard defeating G. Williams and D. Jones 4 and 2, the match stood level at five-all. Last out were Giles Smith and Glyn Fox, a recent newcomer - welcome Glyn, hope you enjoyed the game. They were up against the formidable pairing of L. Barron and M. Gelder, who went on to win 6 and 5. This gave Carmarthen a victory by six to five. The third home match, on April 12, was against Haverfordwest Golf Club. The weather was even better than the previous week, more like July than April. Once again Brian Norman led off, this week partnered by Trevor Lewis. Their opponents were T. Gwillam and C. Jellicoe. The Trefloyne pair played very well and came in with a 4 and 3 win - well done captain, three out of three. This was followed by another good win, Pat Casement and Darrel Jones running out 5 and 4 victors over W. Barnes and R. Coulson. The combination of Gary Hopkins and Dennis Busby had quite a tussle against C. Henderson and G. Ticehurst, before ending two down. Garfield Price and John Shaw had tough opponents in A. Lloyd and J. Davies, the visitors finding the course to their liking and winning 5 and 4. Fifth out were John James and John Cliff, competing against D. Colston and R. Williams. Richie, with a 21 handicap, was hitting pars more often than not. Dave, too, had his share and they finally clinched it on the 16th, leaving a short walk to the 19th! Mel Neale and Keith Wormington had an excellent match against J. Mintoft and D. Banner, finding victory on the 18th. Terry Harvey and his fellow bandit, Barry Wood, made mincemeat of A. Mcdonald and J. Morgan, winning 5 and 4. The pairing of Mike Burke and Steve Oulsnam had no luck against G. Flood and G. Rancor, going down 5 and 3. However, the tables were turned by John Bancroft and his octogenarian partner, Ivan Kirk, playing as well as ever. They defeated R. Box and D. Criggs 5 and 4. Graham Harrison and Glyn Jones saw off the challenge of G. Vaness and S. Thomas by 3 and 2. With a handicap of 28, Glyn had the advantage of 16 shots, much to the disgust of the opposition! Finally, Alan Chapman had to take on T. Derrick and D. Low single-handed. He did a grand job, halving the game - well done Alan. The final score was a win for Trefloyne by 6.5 to 4.5. At each match, the food at Trefloyne was excellent, for which thanks go to Tom, Sarah and staff. Thanks also to the ground staff for keeping the course in such good condition. The next fixture is away to Newport, Pembs., on May 3.
