Golf is nothing but Fun for Juniors

What do you get if you cross football with laser gunfights and tri-golf? Junior golf at Trefloyne and last Sunday saw 10 junior boys and five junior girls, aged from seven to 17, mixing and having more fun than would be allowed at most other golf clubs. To open the junior golf season, a funday was organised. The aim was to encourage all junior members to come and mix and participate in some fun activities and create an atmosphere that encourages the kids to take part and join in. The day started at Jammo's with Laser Galactica - a chance for all to meet and bond in a completely non-golf environment. Junior captain, James Maxwell, who now bears the nickname Miss Piggy, found out that target shooting was not as easy as he thought. The juniors participated in two groups, with Group 1 won by Nick Blum and Group 2 won by Jacob Williams. From here, the juniors walked back to Trefloyne for the six-hole Tri-Golf competition. Both James and Ben Price (junior vice-captain) thought that if you swing really hard with these plastic clubs at the soft large rubber balls they will go better. Sadly, they were mistaken, for James hit his first shot straight right in the woods and had to take three off the tee and Ben chunked the turf and only managed to move the ball about five yards. The youngsters, by now laughing uncontrollably, led the way showing that technique beats strength any day. This competition was played in two sections, with new member Jake Marsh winning the boys and Kristalle Blum winning the girls. The band of juniors then returned to the clubhouse for some well-earned food and refreshments, kindly donated by Kim and Joan Beynon, before trying their hand at the chipping and putting competitions. The six-hole putting competition was won by youngster Max James with a score of 11. This was equalled by Miss Piggy, who received second prize. For the chipping competition, two rings had been placed around the hole on the chipping green and points were awarded from five shots - no points, of course, if the ball did not finish on the green. James 'Miss Piggy' Maxwell kept blaming the wedge he borrowed from Ben for his poor performance, but it cannot be that bad a club, as Ben proved a little later when he scored 27 pts to win the competition. Lewis Ensor was the only junior to hole a chip and score the maximum 20 points for such a shot and finished in second place. The two competitions did prove to head pro, Christine, that all juniors needed more chipping and putting lessons. The final activity for the day was the long-awaited football match between Junior Captain James's team versus Vice Captain Ben's team. Each captain elected their players and thanks must go to course manager, Graham Blum, for allowing the juniors to play the match on the first fairway. Ben's team, despite not putting a player in to defend the goal, won in a whitewash 9-0. It seems the goal was not big enough for any of James's hardy battlers to score, but they were very gracious in defeat. Parents were invited to attend the presentations at the end of the day, at which time Mathew McMann, junior organiser, outlined all that was happening at the club for juniors in the coming season. Thanks must go to Mathew, Christine and Ceryn Harris (junior girls organiser) for their organisation and smooth running of the day's events. Also, to James Maxwell and Ben Price for their support and encouragement of the juniors that attended. Not age, size or ability stopped the enjoyment and comradeship of the day, and many new friendships and golfing pals were made. I don't think anywhere else in the world would such freedom and fun be afforded a group of junior golfers and the Beynons can be pleased that their dream of a junior friendly club is here at Trefloyne. Any junior that missed the fun - stay tuned, as there will be a follow up in summer and a chance for a reversal in the footy scoreline. Junior clinics recommence from Saturday, March 17 - flyers are now available for anyone wishing to attend. These classes are open to members and non-members. Sunday Swingers   Congratulations to Rob Evans for winning the Sunday Morning Cup (at last!). This competition is held every Sunday morning at Trefloyne and is open to all members. The rules are, every time you win on a Sunday morning you drop two shots off your handicap, with the first to 10 below their handicap winning the cup. There's a fee of £1 to play and the winner on the day takes the pot. Any members interested, please see the notice board in clubhouse. All welcome!
