Ladies' Section Autumn round-up

On a wild wet day in early September, Linda Kromrei was the only brave participant in the monthly medal and pendant and deserves a medal for venturing out in such weather putting the rest of us to shame. Luckily, the sun came out in the following weeks and Linda also won the stableford competition on September 5 with 34 points, closely followed by Heather Thorne on 33 points.

On September 9, the Hen and Chick Trophy was won in fine style by Julie Jenkins with 40 points (handicap reductions there!). Ceryn Harries also played some lovely golf to come second with an admirable score of 37 points.

Next it was the turn of rapidly improving player, Gill Morris with 24 points on the 12 hole Tuesday stableford, obviously a name to watch for in the future. Another relatively new member, Fair Fraser, took the honours on the 16th winning the Saturday Stableford with a well-earned 32 points on her vastly reduced handicap. Heather Thorne again had a great Tuesday on the 19th, winning the 12 hole stableford with 23 points, just edging out another of our promising lady players, Hazel Garrod, who had a fine 21 points. It was back to Linda on September 23 when she also suffered a handicap reduction after carding a storming 39 points in the Saturday stableford, again followed by another of Trefloyne's promising players, Sue Crowley, with an excellent 36 points. Sue and Linda also both were clever enough to have a birdie apiece in this round, so well done ladies!

The ladies singles cup was played on a pleasant September Saturday and pitted the stamina and strength of our club champion, Michelle Roberts, against the steady play and experience of lady captain, Linda Kromrei. According to referee, Olive Maher, both ladies played excellent golf and in fact she thought it was more exciting than the Ryder Cup. The fact that the match was not won till the 18th indicates that these two players are wonderful ambassadors for the growing talent that is now apparent in the ladies section at Trefloyne.

Linda was in action again the very next Monday when she and her partner Brian Norman played the Alice Shapcott final against Colin and Julie Jenkins. Things did not start too well for Julie and Colin and this set the tone for the rest of the match as Linda and Brian took a commanding lead despite Brian's sore ribs and some marvellous recovery shots from Colin. It soon became obvious to all four players that this was to be Linda and Brian's day with a well-deserved win on the 12th.

The Bush House Fourball final took place on finals weekend with Vicki Burkes and Sue Shooter playing against Julie Jenkins and Fair Fraser. This match started at 1 pm and finished at 7 pm after 21 holes, so that may tell you how well matched these players were and what an exciting final it was. All four players contributed at some point with some miraculous putts from Vicki and some very consistent play from Sue. However, the sheer ebullience of Fair (who constantly fed chocolate to her partner to keep her moving!), coupled with some steady play from Julie won the match in the end, but it was a game that could easily have gone either way and it was felt by all four players that it was a shame for anyone to loose. But Vicki and Sue will surely be back next year to get their revenge!
