Super Six
The Trefloyne Super Six team travelled to Milford on Friday. The team for this return match was Chris Thompson, Barry Harrison, Dylan Phillips, Mike Allen, James Maxwell and Ben Price.
The Trefloyne players have performed well during their first year in the Super Six and against Milford it was going to be another competitive evening.
Chris Thompson enjoys any challenge that golf can present, whether in the form of courses or players, and the Milford player certainly presented a challenge as he went three up. Chris then had to produce some amazing golf to give himself any chance in his match. It was all-square on the 18th tee and it was down to who could hold his nerve the best; this was in Chris's favour for a good win.
Barry Harrison was up against an in-form Milford man. At one stage Barry was four down, only to fight back to two, but he was unable to hold on to this form for an unfortunate loss. James Maxwell is another of Trefloyne's top players who loves the Super Six League as it provides the opportunity to play top players from other clubs. This is something all competitive golfers look forward to and the Milford player was going to oblige in every way as he won on the closing holes. Dylan Phillips, who moved clubs from Milford to Trefloyne, had to be picked for this one, if only for his knowledge of the course. Again it was a big test for both players, who were playing quality golf. At one time Dylan was trailing by three, only to pull his opponent back and won the 18th for Trefloyne's second victory. Ben Price is a committed player who again loves the challenge this league throws at you. Now a regular team member, he played a good game, even though it is hard to get him to admit to it. At this level you need any advantage you can get, and on this occasion this was in Milford's favour as it was local knowledge that made the difference for a win. Mike Allen, playing his first competitive match for some time, chose a hard place to visit, but at this level they are all hard. Mike again played well, but with strength in depth, Milford fielded another quality player against him. Mike did well, but a win on his debut wasn't to be. Milford won this match four and two. Dyfed League
Trefloyne's Dyfed League team were in action on Saturday against league leaders Newport. This was already a must-win situation. Captain Meurig Evans, who had players unavailable, had to look throughout his squad and make some very difficult decisions to strengthen his team. The team for Trefloyne was Barry Harrison, James Maxwell, Meurig Evans, Ben Price, Kim Beynon, Ian Duffy, Graham Willcocks, Sam Anderson, Gareth Knight, Martin Yates, Bill Myres, Chris Davies, Mel Neale and Simon Author. Barry Harrison and James Maxwell were up against a very strong Newport pair. This match was a battle from the start, with neither able to build a lead of more than one. The golf was in a class of its own, with both sides having to make birdies to win a hole. On the turn, the match was all-square and this was how it stayed until the 15th, which Trefloyne won. Holding on to their slender lead, it was Trefloyne who teed-off first on 18 knowing a half would secure a win, but they improved to win two up. Meurig Evans and Ben Price took second spot for Trefloyne. On the first, Newport putted from off the green for a win, and not to be outdone, his partner putted from off the green on the second for another win. The Trefloyne pair, who had done nothing wrong, found themselves two down after two, but secured a half on three and went on to win four and five. This was another match which would need something special to win. On the turn the match was all-square, only for Newport to win 10. Meurig putted from off the green on 14 and brought the match level, then Ben did the same on 16 to go one up. Now leading for the first time, the Trefloyne pair needed to hold on to this slender lead. Meurig played his second through the green and ended on top of the bank, only to chip in for a two and one win. Rolling back the years, next up for Trefloyne were Kim Beynon and Ian Duffy, who have both played a bit of golf in their time. They found themselves up against two very capable youngsters, but the experience of the Trefloyne pair proved a little too much for a five and four win. Gareth Knight and Martin Yates were next for Trefloyne and produced some quality golf to have the Newport pair under pressure early on. Gareth's distance off the tee kept the Newport players at bay and with Martin playing a solid all-round game, they prevented their opponents coming back into the match, which the Trefloyne pair won four and three. Graham Willcocks and Sam Anderson had their work cut out in their match. With Sam not his usual self, it was hard going against a strong Newport pair. Graham played some outstanding golf to keep them in it, but they could not get themselves back and eventually went down four and three. Bill Myres and Chris Davies for Trefloyne found themselves in another battle. Again there was nothing between these two pairs; as soon as one side won a hole, it was then brought back level. On the turn, Trefloyne were one up and this they held on to going down 17. Expecting at least a half, Newport obviously had other ideas as they won 17 and 18 for a win. Mel Neale and Simon Author were the last pair for Trefloyne. Steady as a rock, it made you think it would need something special to break them down. But again Newport had strength in depth and they were not making anything easy. Again there was nothing in it and it remained all-square on the turn. On 15, Trefloyne made the breakthrough and they were still one up on 17, but Newport showed true grit to win the 18th for a half. This was an excellent golf match, enjoyed by all the players. Newport were very sporting in defeat and are already looking forward to the return. Trefloyne won 4.5 to 2.5.
