Super Six   Last Thursday, Trefloyne were home to Milford Haven, with both clubs looking forward to the match.

Team for Trefloyne was Chris Thompson, Gary Lewis, Scott Davies, James Maxwell, Barry Harrison, Graham Willcocks.

Team for Milford was Jason Edwards, John Roberts, Shaun Dyson, Lyndon, Ian, and Mathew Rhys. On the tee first for Trefloyne was Chris Thompson against Jason Edwards for Milford. With both players hitting very long drives down the middle of the fairway, leaving only a chip into the green, it made this an easy par for both.

The match remained level for the first five, only for Chris to win the sixth and on the turn he remained one up. Chris played some outstanding golf on the back nine to win three and two.

Gary Lewis followed for Trefloyne against a very worthy opponent in John Roberts. Gary was one down after five in what was a very hard match and this was how it remained until the ninth. Then the Milford player took control to win the next five holes to win six and four.

Scott Davies, in third spot for Trefloyne, was up against a very in-form Shaun Dyson, of Milford, and found himself three down after five. With the mood at a low point, it called for the captain to have a word, and this seemed to work as Scott did well to pull back to one down on the turn. This match got better and better, with great golf played to the last, which Scott needed to win for a half. He had his chance, but unfortunately the putt didn't drop, for Milford to win one up.

Graham Willcocks was next for Trefloyne and Lyndon for Milford. Again the Milford player took the lead, but Graham, with all his experience, stayed with his opponent to remain just one down on the turn. But as with most of the matches, Trefloyne could not get anything going on the back nine, and it was another win for Milford.

Last away was James Maxwell for Trefloyne against Mathew Rhys for Milford, in a match which showed what Super Six golf is all about.

Both had a bogey on the first, but then the birdies and eagles came, with James only one down after five and then turning it around to go two up after eight. This was a very high standard of golf, but again the gremlins hit Trefloyne on the back nine, as Mathew pulled the game back level and then proved he can close out hard matches to win three and two.

This match was a great advert for golf. Even though the result was not favourable for the home team, losing five games to one, it was a contest that all the players enjoyed.

Welsh team handicap   The team that represented Trefloyne at Cardigan was Meurig Evans, Bill Myres, Mike Ansell and John Hill.

This was another adventure for Trefloyne, to have a team in a major tournament.

The format was stableford off the white tees with best three cards out of four to count. In the event of a tie the fourth card would count, but not knowing how your team was doing, made this game more interesting as players went out in individual groups.

With Cardigan golf course playing as hard as ever in the very dry conditions and the greens like glass, with challenging pin positions, most players struggled, but the tournament was a good test for all competitors, who came from many clubs throughout West Wales.

Meurig Evans was on the tee at 10.45 am and after not having the best of drives off the first, did well to come away with a bogey. Meurig parred the next two, but on four his ball took a bad bounce into the gorse and he had to play three off the tee; the same happened on five. On six, an uphill par three, he hit the green, only to see his ball roll back into one of the deep bunkers, but again came away with a scrambled four.

With the back nine playing like the front and not having the rub of the green, he eventually did well to score 23 points.

In the next group was Bill Myres, who had his driver working from the start as he found the middle of the fairway off every tee. This obviously helps on any course, but at Cardigan it is a must.

Again the difficulty was finding the green with his second shot, or staying on them, but Bill had the best score for his team with 32 points.

Mike Ansell in the next group found conditions difficult. If you missed the fairway, you were either in gorse or heavy rough, which is always difficult to play out of. One thing about Mike, though, is no matter what golf courses throw at him, he always comes out smiling and did well with 19 points.

John Hill came away not knowing what to expect, and we didn't tell him, as this was his first competition for Trefloyne. John played good golf and looked to be enjoying the challenge that links golf presents, and at the end came in with a useful score of 28 points.

Overall score for Trefloyne was 80 points, with the winning team totalling 99. Tomorrow (Saturday), Trefloyne are home to Carmarthen A, with a 12.30 tee-off.

LADIES SECION

There has been much activity at the golf course for the ladies' section in the last month and we have certainly seen a complete and bizarre mixture of golfing weather (writes J.J.).

The April stableford on the 13th was Blue Belle Jill Morris's day as she stormed in to be a winner for the first time, closely followed by the very experienced Liz Crockford.

On April 16, Olive Maher took the honours with an excellent score of 24 points over 12 holes, again followed by the consistent Liz Crockford with 21 points. The Blue Belle section was well represented in this competition and another new winner emerged in the form of Hazel Garrod, with Jill Morris this time taking the runner-up role. Well done ladies, you are inspiring us all!

As we moved into May, Sheila Phillips played some great golf to win the Medal with a fine 75, followed by Heather Thorne on 77. Heather took the Tuesday medal as well with another good score of 80, followed by Olive Maher and Liz Crockford both on 82. Linda Kromrei won the putting competition run in conjunction that day with only 31 putts!

Olive Maher again appeared in the winning line-up when she won the Bogey on May 23 with -3, followed by Linda Kromrei on -4.

As well as playing their club competitions, the ladies have been motoring through a series of summer matchplay cups, with several interesting line ups in store. Latest results in the Bush House pairs have big hitter Fair Fraser and partner Julie Jenkins beating Linda Kromrei and Gwyneth Jewitt in a fast moving, but well fought match.

They now go on to play the experienced partnership of Liz Crockford and Olive Maher, who beat Heather Thorne and newcomer Sue Crowley in a thrilling battle.

In the Shapcott mixed pairs, Julie and Colin Jenkins, fresh from their holiday, played a very enjoyable match with the genial Trevor and Chris Lewis,   just winning on the 16th hole.

Julie then swapped partners when she joined Linda Kromrei in the first round of the Diamond Inter Jubilee Greensome Foursomes. They were lucky enough to be given a home draw against Tenby Golf Club and after an extremely hard fought game managed a win on the 17th. Good luck in the next round girls!
