Local MP Nick Ainger is telling former trawlermen and their families they could be entitled to a pension if they worked in the fishing industry in the 1960s and '70s. He has been briefed by insurance giant Norwich Union that 4,540 fishermen have not claimed a pension which is theirs by right. Norwich Union have been trying to contact fishermen to tell them what they are entitled to, but they only have their names and dates of birth - not their addresses. Since the campaign to find the fishermen was begun by Hull MP Alan Johnson and taken up by Norwich Union in January 2007, only around 28 per cent of the eligible fishermen have been identified. Mr. Ainger said: "There are a lot of men who have not been traced, but who are entitled to a pension payment. All Norwich Union need is proof of identity, date of birth, National Insurance number, address and a contact 'phone number. Fishermen employed in the 1960s and '70s had their pension contributions deducted from their wages and these were matched by their employers. They had no choice. Now this campaign is trying to give back to them the pension many should have been getting for a long time. Anyone who believes they may be entitled to a pension should contact Fisherman's Pensions Scheme, Ref. CM04, PO Box 203, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, SG1 2W, e-mail fishermen@norwich- union.co.uk or 'phone 01438 732446.
