THE Trustees of the Wynford Davies Travelling Scholarship are again inviting applications for the £500 award for the year April 1, 2007, to March 31, 2008. The scholarship was first offered in 1989, and the recipient was Sarah Morgan, Pembroke School, who travelled to North Carolina on a pharmaceutical exchange visit.

Since that first scholarship, a further 16 awards have been bestowed upon either present or past pupils of secondary schools within the county. The most recent recipient was Philippa Bowen, a former pupil of Tasker Milward VC School, who undertook a medical elective in The Gambia, West Africa.

The award has encouraged and assisted young people to travel to various destinations around the world, and in doing so enabled them to broaden their knowledge and in many cases undertake voluntary or conservation work in some of the most poor and deprived countries throughout the world. The scholarship was established to honour the memory of Wynford Davies, director of education for Pembrokeshire between 1957 and 1974 and who felt travelling was important to broaden educational experiences.

Candidates for the scholarship must be former pupils of a Pembrokeshire secondary school under 25 years of age. Applications should be made by letter setting out the applicant's educational background and the reason for wanting the scholarship.

Applications must be submitted by March 3, 2007, to Mr. T. A. L. Davies, Clerk to the Trustees, 3 Picton Close, Crundale, Haverfordwest.
