THE Wynford Davies Travelling Scholarship is now entering its 16th year and it is hoped that this year will see more applicants than ever seeking to gain the financial reward of winning the scholarship currently worth £500.
The scholarship, which honours the memory of a distinguished Director of Education for Pembrokeshire (1957-74), is awarded annually to students under the age of 26 who have received their secondary education in Pembrokeshire and who are likely to benefit from travelling in the UK or abroad as a means of broadening their horizons and educational experiences.
Since its inception, young people who have taken advantage of the scholarship have all in fact travelled abroad as a means of enhancing their academic studies or undertaking valuable charitable or environmental work.
Last year's recipient Rebekah Brown, a former Pembroke School pupil and a talented viola player, travelled to Maine, USA, to attend the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, along with other promising musicians from around the world.
Applicants wishing to be considered should submit a letter setting out comprehensively his/her educational background and reasons for requiring the scholarship. Closing date is February 28, and short-listed candidates will be interviewed during the Easter vacation. Applications should be directed to, and further information obtained from: Mr. T. A. L. Davies, 3 Picton Close, Crundale, Haverfordwest (tel: 01437 764953).
