THE trustees of the Wynford Davies Travelling Scholarship invite applications for the £500 award for the year 2006/07. During the past 16 years, young people from Pembrokeshire have taken advantage of the scholarship to travel all over the world to supplement their studies or undertake, for example, charitable or conservation work in Third World countries. The first recipient of the award was Sarah Morgan, Pembroke School, who travelled to the USA in 1989 on an exchange visit to the Pharmacy Department, University of North Carolina. Last year, the scholarship was awarded to Andrew Davies, Sir Thomas Picton School, in respect of supporting the work of churches in caring for children of very deprived backgrounds in South America. The scholarship was established to honour the memory of Mr. Wynford Davies, director of education for Pembrokeshire between 1957-74, who felt travelling was important to broaden educational experiences. Candidates for the scholarship must be former pupils of a Pembrokeshire Secondary School under 26 years of age. Applications should be made by means of a letter setting-out the applicant's educational background and the reason for wanting the scholarship. Applications must be submitted by March 6, 2006, and directed to Mr. T. A. L. Davies, clerk to the trustees, 3 Picton Close, Crundale, Haverfordwest.
