Despite being warned that the sand was very soft and the tide was coming in, two drivers drove their vehicles onto Saundersfoot Beach on Bank Holiday Monday. The vehicles reached the outfall pipe, before sinking into the sand at approximately 1.30 pm. The two motorists managed to get out of their vehicles - both Daihatsus - and after losing a struggle to release the vehicles from the sand, the tide engulfed them both. Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team were called to prevent members of the public putting themselves in danger as more and more people tried to wade out to the vehicles. With coastguards issuing warnings to the drivers and public, the vehicles finally became submerged by the incoming tide. The drivers, one local and one from Llanelli, are now making arrangements for their vehicles to be removed by heavy lifting gear on the next low tide. Said Angie Smith, DPRO, at Milford Haven Coastguard: "Always heed advice and never drive your vehicle onto sand. Only drive on beaches where there are signed designated parking areas."
