Various road traffic issues were thrashed out between Narberth town councillors and representatives of the local police force this week.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, members of the council raised a number of matters of concern with Inspector Steve Machett, of the roads policing department for Pembrokeshire, and Sergeant Russell Smith, of the town's police station.

Top of the list of concerns at the meeting was the stretch of road between Kiln Park Corner and Penblewin, which councillors feared was 'dangerous' and likely to result in a fatal accident if no action was taken.

For sometime now, councillors have expressed worries about the speed of traffic using that particular stretch of road and, at a previous meeting, members asked if a 40 mph speed limit could be introduced in the interests of safety.

However, Insp. Machett told members that the police were unable to support their requests as the road collision figures did not justify the extension of such a speed limit.

Since 1998, when measures were taken to improve the problems along the road, there had only been two recorded accidents at that location, with one of those occurring within the existing 40 mph zone, said Insp. Machett.

The officer recommended that the council write to the local authority, who govern the introduction of speed restrictions, about their proposals, and they then would consult with the police.

When asked for their views, the police would give the same recommendation they had to the council, but would inform the county council they had attended a meeting with the council.

Other concerns raised during the discussion included a proposal for the introduction of a speed restriction at Allensbank.

With regard to this matter, Insp. Machett explained that there had been 19 collisions at that location in just under two years. An officer had already looked at the road and put forward a recommendation that a 40 mph buffer zone be introduced.

As a result of this week's meeting, Insp. Machett said that officers would look into any possible road traffic improvements along the A40 between Redstone Cross and Robeston Wathen and the introduction of traffic calming measures near Eastgate Garage and would report their findings to a future council meeting.

The town's Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, thanked Insp. Machett and Sgt. Smith for attending the meeting and for their work in Narberth.

"We are very lucky to have a good working liaison with the police, whether it be through the council, Pubwatch or other local organisations, " she commented.
