Sir,

I refer to the report published last week for the July meeting of Saundersfoot Community Council.

I was surprised to read the response from Saundersfoot Harbour Commissioners to the perfectly reasonable request for calming measures to be placed at the exit from their car park.

Traffic calming measures and a stop sign are in place at the entrance to ensure drivers pay their fees. However, on leaving the car park, it would appear from their response that Saundersfoot Harbour Commissioners do not feel they have a responsibility to ensure vehicles travel safely.

First there are concerns for pedestrians walking across the exit. Secondly, as vehicles are leaving the car park to join the main public highway they should stop and observe the Highway Code before proceeding onto the main road - unfortunately not always the case.

Vehicle accidents are mainly dealt with through insurance companies and therefore the police and local highway authority will not hold statistics as to how frequently they occur and if they are the result of vehicles leaving the car park too fast.

At this time of year in particular, there is an increased volume of traffic in the vicinity of the harbour car park and therefore a greater need for safety measures to be in place.

I very much hope that Saundersfoot Harbour Commissioners will look again at this issue and reconsider their decision.
