Sir,
Having read W. D. Ashcroft's vehemently worded letter in your edition of August 16, I would wish to reassure you that Tenby will not be losing all its visitors from the north-west of England as a result of the summer traffic regulations.
The idea of restricting access by car to the town centre for a set period is basically sound and enhances the appearances of the town. It makes for a relaxed and pleasant town centre environment.
The notion that we all have the right to drive wherever we want whenever we want is rightly coming under challenge.
I was also perplexed by W. D. Ashcroft's assertion that public transport is not a feasible option for visitors from a long distance. I have travelled conveniently from Manchester by train with my family on a number of occasions. On summer Saturdays, Tenby has the benefit of through trains from London, Birmingham and Manchester.
Ian Violet,
60 Brookburn Road,
Manchester.
