Shopkeepers in Pembrokeshire have been given full marks after passing a test to see whether they would sell alcohol, cigarettes or fireworks to an under-age child.

County council trading standards officers sent a 12-year-old boy into a dozen shops in the south of the county to see if he could purchase the goods.

Alcohol and fireworks can only be sold to those 18 years of age and over, and cigarettes to 16s and over. The maximum penalty is a £5,000 fine or six months in prison.

Said Nigel Watts of the council's public protection division: "I am delighted to report that the young lad was not sold any items.

"The shopkeepers we visited showed a responsible attitude towards the law and refused to sell the youngster the goods he asked for."

The exercise took place a week before Bonfire Night and was part of a larger exercise carried out with other local authorities throughout Wales.
