Pembrokeshire County Council chairman, Clr. Mickey Folland, has opened the upgrading of the track between Kiln Park and Tenby Golf Club.
As part of the Pembrokeshire Local Accessibility Drive proposal funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, the scheme improves the track leading to the railway station and town centre.
The track is also part of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the National Cycle Network Route 4 - the Celtic Trail between the Severn Bridge and Pembroke Dock and Fishguard.
The scheme has been a result of a partnership between Pembrokeshire County Council, Sustrans, the Golf Club and Bourne Leisure (Kiln Park) and has been praised already by the many users and golfers alike.
The former potholed track has been drained, upgraded and surfaced and a new 'Pembrokeshire hegebank' constructed over most of its .5km length to provide a barrier between users of the track and stray golf balls.
Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for environment and transportation, county councillor Brian Hall, said: "In such a picturesque location the use of netting or fencing was contemplated, but rejected on aesthetic grounds in favour of this more traditional solution.
"Great care has been taken to complement the surroundings and the substantial hedgebank constructed from local materials has truly exercised the New Deal Team training scheme assisted by the Sustrans team of three on site."
After the tarmac has been laid the track will be surface dressed with local sandy coloured gravel to soften the impact and blend better with the surroundings, and some planting on top of the hedgebank will be added.
Opening the track, Clr. Folland said: "We are very pleased to see this important link completed. It will allow better access for the town of Tenby to the railway station, the Coast Path and National Cycle Network. It will provide a scenic route for all users, including the young, the old and those with disability. The care over the specification for the works ensures it enhances the scenic beauty of the area."
Sustrans manager for South Wales Wales, David Judd, commented: "We are delighted to see this scheme opened. It shows what can be achieved with partnership and has provided a much improved route for walkers, families with push chairs, cycles large and small and wheelchairs, making a significant access improvement to Tenby for non car traffic and assisting public transport."
