Tenby Townswomen's Guild joined with 10 other guilds at Clydach recently to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the South West Wales Federation of Townswomen's Guilds. In company with Pembroke Borough Guild, they journeyed to Clydach to take part in a service of Praise and Thanksgiving at St. Mary's Church, Clydach, at which almost 250 guild members were present. The national chairman, Mrs. Pamela Pollock and the national vice-chairman, Mrs. Connie Baines, were the guests of honour at an inspirational and uplifting service at which the Vicar of Clydach, the Rev. Timothy Hewitt, gave a warm welcome to all members and took part in the service with prayers into which he had very obviously put a great deal of thought. During the service, the beautiful passage from Corinthians, Chapter 13, was read by federation chairman Anne Sillick. Mrs. Pollock's address was based on stories of women in the Bible and their relevance in the modern world and was very well received by everyone. St. Mary's rang with the sound of Townswomen singing well-known hymns especially chosen for the day. After the service, coaches conveyed everyone to Manor Park Hotel where in a most attractive setting a most delightful afternoon tea was served by an excellent and attentive staff. Before tea, Federation chairman Anne Sillick welcomed both the national chairman and vice-chairman to the celebrations and considered it a great honour for the federation that they should both be present. She also thanked deputy chairman Joy Griffiths, of Tenby, for arranging the event. Mrs. Griffiths then presented Pam (whose birthday was the following day) with a crystal pendant with which she was delighted. It was something, she said, which would always remind her of a wonderful day and a memento of her last visit as chairman before her term of office finished in July. During tea, the raffle with most attractive prizes was drawn and this was followed by differing forms of entertainment provided by guilds from Aberavon, Baglan, Burry Port, Clydach, Gorseinon, Pontadawe, Port Talbot and Tenby. All these items were very much appreciated and enjoyed with everyone joining in the community singing items at the end. Proceedings were brought to a close with a poem 'Fifty Years Together' written and read by Joy Griffiths. This was a lovely day, blessed by wonderful weather and one of which we shall have very happy memories. At the June meeting, the speaker was Mr. David Watts who spoke of the evolution of the railways from their inception and in particular of Pembrokeshire railways. His tremendous enthusiasm for and considerable knowledge of his subject was very evident, but unfortunately time did not allow members to hear how they had performed in the interesting questionnaire he had prepared for them and which they had filled in at the beginning of the afternoon. Thank you Mr. Watts for a most interesting talk. During Pembrokeshire Fish Week, members are meeting at Carringtons for a special fish lunch on Friday, June 29. If you have not already put your name down for this and would like further information, please ring Rosemary or Joy as soon as possible. it is proving to be very popular. At the meeting on Thursday, July 5, there will be a quiz, followed by the usual cream tea.
