The controversial subject of car parking within Tenby's walled town has been under the spotlight again this week.

Sufficient car parking spaces within the walled town were described as 'essential' by town councillors in respect of any future traffic order plans drawn up by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Discussing the matter at Tuesday evening's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mike Evans told his colleagues he felt that it was essential to maintain a high degree of parking facilities, particularly in Tudor Square, to ensure that the town thrived all year round and remained viable.

Clr. Evans informed fellow councillors that a 'stop and shop' aspect to parking procedures could be adopted within the north and south side areas of the walled town, allowing motorists to park in bays for a limited waiting period of 30 minutes during set hours.

"After these hours which could run from 8 am to 5 pm, the restrictions on the bays would be lifted, allowing for overnight parking to those who live in the town," explained Clr. Evans, who had been in talks with county council's traffic manager, John Price, over the arrangements, plus other aspects of parking in the town.

"Although there is a degree of free parking outside the town during the winter at the multi-storey, it's important to the shops and businesses within the town that motorists are still encouraged to come into the centre with free short term parking facilities in place to allow this," continued Clr. Evans.

Councillors agreed to endorse the ideas put forward by Clr. Evans. Members also agreed that they needed to be proactive on all parking issues within the town and plan discussions for other areas in the future.
