Young people from all over Pembrokeshire have been advised how to stay safe on the county's roads in 'Top Drive'. The aim of the four-day road safety initiative is to reduce the number of young people injured in road accidents. Approximately 450 students from Pembrokeshire College took part. "The young people were told how to avoid being in a collision, what to do if you are involved in one, and what to do if you come across one," said Clr. Brian Hall, cabinet member for transportation and environment. "Various agencies gave them tips on what to look for when buying a car or motorcycle, how to insure their vehicles, and vehicle maintenance. "They were also advised on the dangers of drink-driving and driving while under the influence of drugs." The students watched and participated in various demonstrations. Firefighters from Mid and West Wales Fire Service showed how they would cut out a driver or passenger from a vehicle involved in a collision, while paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service demonstrated how to deal with casualties. Pembrokeshire County Council has invited its partnering agencies to develop a series of initiatives to address the rising number of road collisions involving young people in the county. "Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire College and the Welsh Assembly Government created the Top Drive initiative to educate young drivers on how to drive responsibly," said Clr. Hall. "Young drivers are very vulnerable in their first two years of driving, because of their lack of experience and sometimes over-confidence. "There is also an ongoing investigation into road collisions in the county. The Top Drive is just part of a programme to reduce such collisions." Clr. Hall also extended his thanks to the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society for their help in staging the event at the Withybush Showground, Haverfordwest. Taking part in Top Drive were Pembrokeshire County Council, Dyfed-Powys Police Mid and West Wales Fire Service, the Welsh Ambulance Service, Green Dragon Motorcycles, Hedley Davies Insurance, PRISM, ATS Tyres, ROSPA, and local driving instructors. • For more information on road safety, contact Pembrokeshire County Council's road safety officer, John Gobbi, on 01437 775144.
