On Thursday and Friday, October 18 and 19, Pembrokeshire Music Service will play host to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) Brass Ensemble and their musical director and head of brass, Kevin Price.
The RWCMD Symphonic Brass comprises some of the finest brass players currently studying at the RWCMD.
The ensemble has developed its own professional role, establishing itself at Llandaff Cathedral where they work with the boy and girl choristers, performing regular recitals and often supporting services at the cathedral.
The ensemble is featured in the Llandaff Festival every summer.
RWCMD Symphonic Brass tours within the UK, collaborating with choirs such as the Royal Holloway University of London, the Sitwell Singers in Derby Cathedral and the Cardiff Polyphonic Choir.
This work raises the profile of the RWCMD and also provides students with essential touring and administrative experience.
In 2009, the ensemble performed at Buckingham Palace as part of a Royal Gala concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of the RWCMD, and in 2011, they performed fanfares for the Queen's visit to Cardiff, opening the Welsh Parliament.
Projects in 2011-12 included a joint performance with Fine Arts Brass for the Malcolm Arnold Society, Sea Dogs-a collaboration in words and music with composer Gareth Wood and poet Francesca Kay, the Llandaff and Machen Festivals, educational projects with the Greater Gwent Youth Brass Ensemble and with CCGV Symphonic Brass, as well as fanfare performances for HM Queen Elizabeth II in Llandaff Cathedral during the Diamond Jubilee tour.
In November-December 2012, the ensemble will premiere a new Christmas production- Santa's Stressful Day in collaboration with composer Gareth Wood and poet Francesca Kay in the Dora Stoutzker Hall, RWCMD.
The young ensemble will deliver a series of mini interactive concerts at four of the county's secondary schools, without doubt inspiring the next generation of young brass players.
The RWCMD Brass Ensemble will perform a concert at St. Mary's Church in Tenby on Thursday, October 18, starting at 7 pm. In this concert will be the first public performance of the newly formed Pembrokeshire County Symphonic Brass Ensemble directed by music service teacher Colin Barrett.
Colin studied trombone with Kevin at the RWCMD so is very much looking forward to working alongside him in what promises to be an entertaining evening. Tickets will be available on the door at £5 and free to all pupils.
