Tenby Walled Town Residents Association is calling on Pembrokeshire County Council to resolve some of the problems that people still have regarding the town's pedestrianisation scheme. Association chairman Richard Walker has written to the department of transport and the environment at County Hall asking that ideas that have been discussed in the past be tried to assess their impact. "We are delighted with Pembrokeshire County Council's decision to repeat last year's scheme using the current Experimental Order," said Mr. Walker. "We are also pleased that this decision has been made a full three months before the start of the scheme to allow those people in Tenby that will be affected to properly plan ahead. "As this year will be another experiment, TWTRA asks you to consider resolving some of the problems that people still have and also to try other things that have been discussed in the past to assess their impact." Some of those suggested topics include the following: • Problems associated with the effect of restricting all deliveries to just two hours in the morning be addressed. • Frequent log-jams of traffic both in and leading up to the entrances of the walled town are monitored in the two hours prior to 11 am so that the environment in which the people who have to drive into the town is recognised. • To simplify the scheme, could the Park and Ride bus on its way to the harbour go through Tudor Square rather than down Crackwell Street. • To avoid the long waiting times for vehicles accessing the harbour area, could the requirement to 'follow the bus' be relaxed and vehicles allowed to travel freely in both directions along Crackwell Street. As an alternative to allowing two-way traffic in Crackwell Street, perhaps traffic lights could be tried. • Now that the principle of the scheme is agreed by virtually everyone and there is still 11 weeks before the start, could the signage to inform motorists be improved? • Better publicity of the scheme. A copy of the letter was also sent to County Councillors Mike Evans and Michael Williams and Tenby Town Council. FOOTNOTE: The walled town will be pedestrianised from Sunday, July 22, until Monday, September 3, between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm.
