Sir,

I have been wondering how anyone in their right mind could possibly have decided that it was sensible to increase the business rate in Narberth by 200 per cent. The only answer I could come up with was that this person had a jumpy finger and had pressed the nought button twice by mistake!

But then what about those public servants in Pembrokeshire County Council who also thought it was a good idea? Do they really think it is acceptable to destroy the economy of a small town, make people unemployed and detrimentally affect the tourism of the county? If they are so out of touch with reality that they really believe this, then they should no longer be employed by and paid for by the tax payer.

If the county council is short of money, then it should do what many of us have been doing for decades, 'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'. At all levels of local government money is wasted by poor administration and unnecessary spending.

Will the old school be left to rot like Bloomfield House was, thereby causing damage which had to be paid for by Narberth?

It is time for County Hall to look at itself, remember who it is working for and consider how it can justify expenses, including plane trips to the Shetland Isles, enormous top level salaries down to totally inefficient and costly mechanical pavement sweepers, and no doubt other little perks we don't know about.

Angela Walker,

Narberth.
