WHEN Narberth artists Tina Lewis and Claudia Myatt met, their work appeared to be very different. Tina's large and vibrant paintings were largely based around life on a Pembrokeshire smallholding, while Claudia had spent most of the last 10 years painting crisp watercolours of boats and the sea. Claudia painted red sails at sunset and Tina was painting sheep and rusty tractors. Claudia's sketchbooks are leading her back to the sea and the ebb and flow of tidal creeks. "Whether I'm looking at the coastline from the water or looking out to the horizon from the shore, the sea and its relationship with the land is a subject that I'll never tire of," Claudia commented. Now Tina's work is headed coastward, to rock pools, cliffs and the way the tide sculpts sand, wood and rock. Tina said: "I am fascinated by the technical trickery of showing 'what lies beneath' in the teeming rock pools. Oil glazes to reflect clouds on the surface of the water and watercolour under washes to show the pebbles and rocks below. To catch the mood of the seaside is the real challenge." The exhibition 'Time and Tide', which opened at the Narberth Gallery, on Friday, is the meeting of their obsession with Pembrokeshire's coast and creeks. It shows the effects of time and the marks made by both man and nature on our coast, from fraying ropes and footprints in the sand to ripples in the rock pool and wave scoured cliffs. The exhibition runs until July 19. Narberth Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm.
