The Welsh Assembly Government funded Tidy Towns project has been officially launched in the county with a successful week of events in and around Pembroke.
The project is a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Pembrokeshire County Council and it aims to engage the local community in caring for and enhancing their local environment.
Pembroke has become the first area in Pembrokeshire to be targeted under the scheme. The week kicked off with a launch at Pembroke Town Hall which saw representatives from Keep Wales Tidy, Pembrokeshire County Council, Dyfed-Powys Police, local dignitaries and volunteers come together in the spirit of partnership working.
Throughout the week, local community groups, schools and youth clubs took part in litter picks and other projects, including footpath clearance and graffiti removal.
With assistance of various organisations, around 200 volunteers helped remove more than 100 bags of litter from areas of Pembroke, Monkton and Freshwater West beach.
The woodland area at Devon Drive has been transformed by the removal of blackthorn surrounding the woods along with a further clean-up which yielded around a tonne of fly-tipped waste and litter.
The Castle and Mill Ponds have seen several improvements which include footpath improvements, better access to seating areas for pushchairs and wheelchair users and new picnic benches. The improvements which took place were put forward by the local community group who carry out regular litter picks around Pembroke.
The next areas to be targeted will be Fishguard, Goodwick and surrounding areas during the week beginning November 24.
