Work will commence later this month on a new footpath and traffic calming scheme at Bridge Hill, Narberth.

This has been talked about for over 30 years by various local  authorities and current County Councillor Wynne Evans says he's 'delighted that a capital funding bid for this £96,000  scheme has been successful'.

The scheme will involve a slight narrowing of the carriageway and the construction of the footpath between Castle Street to Mill Lane along the eastern side of the road.

Work on the scheme will start during the week commencing March 23 and is scheduled to take 10 weeks to complete. The appointed contractor is Evan Pritchard Ltd.

Said Clr. Evans: "I have been working very closely with County Hall officers and the highways department to make this dream a reality."

Some 18 months ago, Clr. Evans held a meeting with residents of the area and received overwhelming support to pursue this.

Continued Clr. Evans: "As road safety was paramount to us all, even though certain groups in the town have totally unpractical ideas about alternative routes against the wishes of the public, fortunately, common sense has prevailed and the safe route to school is the highest priority.

"There is increased usage of the road with younger families living in the Bridge and Mill Lane areas, as well as caravan parks, and from this week, the new allotment scheme will start in the Valley Road district, which will be tremendous and in itself a huge achievement by those involved in the allotments, so this footpath was even more urgently needed.

"Work will take place over a three-four week period and there will be traffic delays. I will now be making further capital fund bids for other new much-needed footpaths within my ward.

"I am very pleased that a local well-respected firm in Evan Pritchard Limited has been awarded the contract."
