Plans to site a new civic amenity and recycling centre on land off Devonshire Drive, near Saundersfoot, have been approved by members of Pembrokeshire County Council's planning and rights of way committee. The majority of members voted in favour of the application at a meeting at County Hall, Haverfordwest, last week, despite several letters of objection to the proposal, on the grounds of traffic increase in the area. Objectors also said they had concerns over the impact the development, which is to be located on a site south-west of Crane Cross and north-west of New Hedges, would have on the character and visual amenity of the area. A similar application proposed for land alongside the A478 road, next door to Brooklands Nursing Home, was withdrawn by Pembrokeshire County Council last year, the day before it was due to go before members of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's development management committee. This latest development to be known as the 'Crane Cross Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre', which will replace the Salterns site in Tenby, will be open to the public from 8 am to 6 pm, every day from April 1 to September 30, and between 8 am and 4 pm, from October 1 to March 31. Saundersfoot Community Council said that they agreed in principle with the scheme, but requested that traffic calming measures, including speed restrictions and adequate signage, be considered, whilst St. Mary Out Liberty Community Council had no objections to the proposals. The application was approved, subject to a number of planning conditions, with the head of highways and construction recommending that traffic calming measures are introduced along the A478, along with improved signage at the junction with Devonshire Drive at Crane Cross.
