Local councillors have voted not to support plans to possibly transform one of Tenby's gardens into a theatre venue. Members of Tenby Town Council recently met with Gary Tapley, who has a background in acting and theatre production and Freshwest Design, who gave a presentation on an idea to turn Brother Thomas' Garden on Crackwell Street, into an outdoor theatre location, similar to The Minack Theatre in Penzance, Cornwall. Mr. Tapley explained that Pembrokeshire County Council had already been approached about the project and that it had been suggested that the town council could get on board in taking responsibility of the garden's maintenance, should the scheme come to fruition. Discussing the item further at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter said that she felt it was a good idea, but was concerned that the town council would lose control of the garden if they agreed to the project, with Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane agreeing. "I just feel at the moment that we should not put our name to anything as all we have seen is just a presentation," she remarked. Clr. Mike Evans felt that all the people who had proposed the project were after was for the town council to support the scheme in principal, so that it would enable them to gain matchfunding down the line. "They are offering us their time and energy to enhance a community project and under Mr. Tapley's stewardship, the garden has been well used and well care for," he commented. "We're not committing to anything other than helping these people having a go at looking at funding for such a project," added Clr. Lawrence Blackhall. The town clerk told members that the county council were unlikely to consider leasing the garden to a trust and that the town council would have to be in agreement to lease or for a peppercorn purchase to take place. Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown proposed that the town council write in support in principal for the project. Five members voted in favour of the motion with five voting against, and the Mayor's casting vote deciding not to support the scheme.
